regardless of whether the OG video game was a clusterF- of numbers and char builds and so on.

(to game designers) If you plan on making a combat oriented board game, that's a different thing. Make a board game.

5e has disillusioned both target groups (narrative-focused and board-gamey players).

Unfortunately it is easier, it is more sales oriented, their video game system is nearly impossible to transpose into a playable thing (what with the number bloating and crunch). IMO, modern narrative oriented, rules lite games based in IPs always shine in terms of play experience in the end.
