Yesterday I was told that my car was embarrassing for a lawyer to drive. Last week a judge was among the people who complained. I've always had people complain that I'm not a stereotypical lawyer, but there is absolutely a societal shift happening.

I'm not sure if this is all an effect of fascism, or a cause of fascism, or an intentional attempt to further stratify society, but I absolutely despise it. It just all seems so shallow and materialistic.

I got more than a dozen complaints last week alone that I don't drive a luxury car.

What is happening to us?

It funds legal aid agencies, which (a) only cover certain kinds of cases, (b) have waitlists of months or years because they can't meet the demand (and of course the case won't be stayed whilst you're on the waitlist), and (c) if they take LSC money are banned from representing undocumented people.

In colorado you had to pay a filing fee in order to request a public defender. Guess which segment of the populace will never have the money to pay for that.

In reality, it's the opposite. Nobody wants to do pro bono or public interest work BECAUSE OF the student loan debt.

I'm fine with that tbh

As soon as you say a person should not get a lawyer because of what they are ALLEGED to have done, you've just dispensed with the burden of proof and decided they're guilty - and that their guilt vitiates their human rights.

Also, there is literally no difference between saying "my tax dollars shouldn't go to give [x group] healthcare" and "my tax dollars shouldn't give criminals/debtors lawyers." It's just otherizing propaganda, plus it's prejudging guilt.

Saying that a universal right to counsel would increase reliance on lawyers and therefore prevent abolition is like saying universal healthcare increases reliance on doctors and therefore supports big pharma. It's a non sequitur. I believe in universal representation BECAUSE I'm an abolitionist.
