They say the past is a foreign country. I hope in whatever future nation from which you've come to visit mine They find us trite, predictable, even exhausting. Why were so many of our stories about worlds in terminal decay? Could we really not recall the constancy with which the glow returns to the horizon always? I hope it takes a semester to explain the context that shaped our imaginations. I hope you snicker and roll your eyes at having to read about yet another derivative dystopia. "Well, that's the 21st Century for you," I hope you say, "They didn't see a way out of the cruelty. They didn't know their power." I hope you find little you can relate to. 600+ hours, three full clears, and I did not know you could ride on these things until just now when I went to look up suggestions for getting through this dungeon. I previously did it with fire resist gear and chugging health potions, rolling through the lava all the way down.

I still essentially believe that the ideal lifespan of a grand strategy game is about eight years.
I think the healthy life cycle of a gsg is about eight years. You start pre-production on the sequel by no later than Year 5 and announce it during Year 7 to release before the previous game turns 9. CK2 had a very healthy life cycle because pre-production on the sequel started three years after release. Those first five expansions up to Sons of Abraham were all pretty awesome. Way of Life in 2014 was indispensable. Conclave in 2016 was indispensable. They could have stopped right there. It received its final expansion a bit after its sixth birthday and finished strong with Holy Fury, but I was even at that point feeling like it was needing to be put out to pasture. EU4 came out in 2013. It really started cooking in 2014 with Art of War. I would say by 2018 (especially by Golden Century) it was treading water and by 2020/2021 I was really like, "What are you guys doing?" Leviathan and Emperor were oil spills that had to be painstakingly cleaned up. And there were five more expansions after that which were all whatever. It vastly overstayed its welcome. Stellaris released in 2016. It became a mature game in 2018 after Utopia and Apocalypse. 2022 was kind of the point I remember being most fond of it, six years after release, right around when Overlord came out. By 2023 they were in Homer Car mode. Like First Contatc was fine but Galactic Paragons was the moment I felt like it was trying to do too much. Astral planes was honestly just mediocre event slop that they farmed out to a third party. They've kind of gotten back on course at this point but it's overdue for a sequel. Hearts of Iron 4 was also 2016. Its first few expansions sucked but like 2018 - 2021 (Waking the Tiger through No Step Back) were peak. I can't really say much about what happened after that because I more or less completely lost interest by 2022. But I don't desperately need a new HoI game and if people are still enjoying it then more power to them I guess. It's kind of off my radar entirely.

Not really so much "mean" as it is one of my great joys in life to take people who think they're not good at games and [crossed out: "dom them into] force them to prove themselves wrong. "I have narrativized and made it part of my self-image that I am not good at video games" is like blood in the water for me. I can smell it from miles away. I will teach your grandpa to beat Dark Souls if he's willing to learn. I will teach your cat. The more someone tells me they're sure they can't do it, the more powerful I become. My belief in my friends is far more powerful than their self-doubt ever will be 😤

There are certain factions that would move up a tier or even two if you play them "Headless," that is park the faction leader at the capital as a permanent garrison commander or just get them killed and never re-hire them, then pick a generic lord to be your new "faction leader:"

"Adulthood" as we knew it growing up was always essentially a marketing scheme.
Mid-Century American Adulthood was a performance shaped by media and (probably more strongly) the advertising industry that fell completely out of fashion when the perks it was supposed to provide evaporated and so the things it asked you to give up were no longer worth sacrificing. And in my opinion, good riddance. If I wanted to go back and get a media studies degree this is probably what my thesis would be about. Clerks was the beginning of the end. Nobody did Mid-Century American Adulthood better than Don Draper and he (SPOILERS) jumped off a building (SPOILERS). That about sums it up.

Unfortunately, a lot of this information is hidden behind many tooltips, in game files, or not documented at all, and some of it appears bugged. I am going to note all of those things with colours: most of the text is white, meaning things that work perfectly sensibly, as described in-game; some is blue, which means it's not documented anywhere in-game and I had to find it in the files or experimentally; some is yellow, which means I consider this to be bugged – explicitly working against the documentation; some is red, which means I have no idea how it actually works, even though I tried to figure it out.
