I still haven't found a job as of yet, so I decided to start working on a little project which had been on my mind for MONTHS now.

Remember that your characters have lives outside of the story. They aren't just waiting in the wings for their turn to say their lines. If you're reintroducing a character, have them be doing something, like making breakfast or reading a book.
