This raises exciting questions about the molecular and physical requirements for re-building each part of the limb.

Similar to whole-limb regeneration, nerves are essential for the digits to regenerate. Amazingly, the authors found that the second finger regenerates more accurately than the others (why?) - but apparently not due to the degree of nerve innervation or differences in classical limb patterning genes.
