Steel Magnolias is my movie! I cry/laugh every time I watch the funeral scene…and Daryl Hannah before Kill Bill is a complete 180.

I’m really struggling with the fact that people in my lab have never seen “Mrs. Doubtfire” and “Adams Family Values.” I literally had to explain the Thanksgiving scene and re-enact the song. #MillennialPI

Collectively, our results highlight a role for amino acid storage proteins in regulating stem cell lineages in Drosophila.
lesleynweaver.bsky.social
Lastly, we found that adipocyte-derived storage proteins regulate TOR signaling directly in GSCs.
lesleynweaver.bsky.social
We also found that the predicted storage protein receptors (Fbp1 and Fbp2) are present in ovarian follicle cells and Lsp2 is present in the oocyte.
lesleynweaver.bsky.social
We found that larval serum proteins (LSPs) are expressed in adult female adipocytes (at significantly lower levels compared to larvae) and are required for maintaining GSC number.

In this study we investigated the role of adipocyte-derived amino acid storage proteins in regulating germline stem cell (GSC) maintenance in the adult ovary.

RIP to Bloomington summer life. Not ready for all of the meetings...and "traffic."

Some journals are claiming that you need to pay big $$ for gold open access to comply with NIH's new public access policy. FYI that is total bs. You can comply by depositing the Accepted Manuscript into PubMed Central on the Date of Publication without embargo. Pass it on.

I guess I should re-post from the Bird Site "The Rules For Academic Success here":

I always get asked for advice about starting/surviving the tenure track. Here are the rules I've found useful. Thought I'd put it out there for the masses...

This list gets longer all the time

I've reached that PI stage where I realize I'm about to suggest an experiment that is more "instant gratification" in getting an answer, but way more annoying to do...so I'm going to insist on the "annoying" experiment of course!

Congrats Beronda! Is there a way to pre-order?

Thanks to all who have expressed a willingness to support FlyBase. The wheels of bureaucracy are large and grind slowly. We expect to have a fee process in place by July. @flybase.bsky.social

🚨🧵shared by Prof @michael-hoerger.bsky.social on the word choices researchers have to carefully balance if they want to be considered for funding via US federal sources:

1) Here's a quick example of how the federal government is censoring the best scientific research. It's not just cuts to ongoing research.

It's new grant submissions too...

Below the text is a screenshot showing two sentences:
"Scan completed"
and
"No forbidden words found"

This gift link needs to be shared far and wide. All of the NIH cancellations and delays in one place with several infographics for exploring them. 🧪
