Client-Server apps still dominate software despite quietly eroding privacy and data ownership. We just refreshed our old but important article about how the Local-First movement tackles these issues:

This was a massive two-month audit (not counting a one-month preliminary review) carried out by a team of four auditors — two from our full-time team and two partner experts.
Audit complete: our report for new version of ZKsync is live!

Given a codebase of such complexity, issues were of course found. Matter Labs has already fixed all issues of HIGH and MEDIUM severity👏

That's exactly why at ARK Builders we work on password-less login-free apps without sacrificing sync/backup capabilities.
16 billion passwords leaked through Apple, Google and Facebook. These giants are supposed to be on the edge of privacy and security technologies, but it seems they turn into huge honeypots.

Most modern software is network-dependent. No internet, no access.
But real productivity means being able to work anytime, anywhere.

Local-first software ensures:
🚀 Instant access, even offline
🔄 Automatic sync when internet is available
🔒 Data that stays yours

Modern software feels slower.

Why? Because cloud-based apps make you wait. Click a button, and your request travels thousands of miles before anything happens. Local-first software? Instant. No lag. No spinners. Just speed.

Let’s bring back snappy apps. #LocalFirst #SoftwarePerformance

We do kinda similar thing at @ark-builders.dev but hope to build the framework for native apps using #RustLang, #Tauri, #Kotlin and #SwiftLang. Core transport tech for us is #Iroh
Sync engines enable web apps with:

- instant (< 1ms) interactions
- full-stack reactivity
- dramatically simpler dx

Despite this, sync hasn't taken off because it doesn't generalize to more complex apps.

I'll be speaking about how @zero.rocicorp.dev solves this next week. Come check it out!
Aaron Boodman @aaronboodman.com will introduce Zero: A Sync Engine for the Whole Web for the final session. The much-anticipated launch from the folks that brought you Replicache.

Ever notice how much time you spend trying to make your devices work together? File transfers, note syncing, finding that one photo, why is it all so complicated?

We’re working to make tech simpler, so you can focus on what matters.

why aren't there more apps that use WebDAV, it's so dumb that a simple way to sync any kind of data you want across any device and almost nobody bothers making stuff for it lol

A friend told me about similar issue with data in their company:
1. They design high-definition 3D building plans.
2. Models are stored on a shared local network server.
3. Employees log in and exchange filesystem paths.

Obviously, this approach is too slow and error-prone.
Today is getting off to a slow start. New Macbook pro m4 arrived for setting up files and building supports. Sadly we have to sync every file from our network store to the device to build an index or we can't locate any existing files! 4TB of data gonna be a few hours of staring at a download bar!
