Change can happen but it has to be within you and the environment to change, such as people assisting it, has to be there. The nature within you to be susceptible to change and the nurture to make it possible. The reason there are so many self help books is for most it is impossible to reprogram

I know some very accomplished people who are very good in their particular fields such as law, computer science, engineering and business who are MAGA. I know lots of people in the building trades who are highly skilled who are MAGA. You are not stupid just because you hold irrational beliefs.

Propagandists are excellent at manipulating society in order to gain power. Logic? Formal or informal? Some of the best at applying informal fallacies are those who appeal to the emotions and beliefs. Reason is a slave to the passions.

Add the absence of free will into the equation and politics can be quite frustrating because it takes years possibly decades to change beliefs to accept certain policies. You have to get people when they are young. Religions, the military and authoritarians totally understand this.

It's not about intelligence it's about beliefs. Humans are first and foremost an irrational animal and cannot be any other way. There are lots of intelligent people who believe that someone was put to death 2000 years ago and rose to life 3 days later. How irrational is that?

I have read the first 2 books. The first fills in Lyra's background when she was born and how she winds up at Oxford. The second is when she is a young adult. I don't know if anything can match the first trilogy
