Instead, we suggest that their legitimacy is derived from the appropriate role of climate scientists as trustees, who must be held accountable through mechanisms governed by public reason.

Can international institutions tackling climate change derive their legitimacy from the epistemic authority of climate scientists? In our new paper, Antoinette Scherz and I argue that the presence of non-epistemic values in climate science challenges this view.

Philosophers often claim everything deserves to be questioned, ever question has a place in philosophy. Until you start talking about intimacy and people shy away. Next year, I will start teaching a research master course entitled 'Politics of intimacy'.We will be asking the uncomfortable questions!

One piece of advice for anyone on the #philosophy job market: have a website. It doesn’t have to look great, but people will look it and use it to get a sense of your interests and credibility as a candidate even if it’s not a formal part of the application process. So it needs to exist. #PhilJobs

I never even considered going to the US. I'd have rather dropped academia ^^

I'd slightly extend this rule: if the task can actually be achieved using an LLM, this signals that the task in question is unnecessary (looking at you, university administrators).

For those early-career scholars in my network interested in Environmental Philosophy and Animal Ethics: come join us at the VEPSS Summer School! vepss.eu/programme/

An ideal place for networking and exploring new topics and ideas! I'll be lecturing there, together with other great philosophers!

Because you know how to write essays and do philosophy. When you are trying to teach students how to do those things in order to be able to assess how good Chat GPT generated stuff is and they hand in essays written by Chat GPT, it is very infuriating...

In my dreams today, seriously, I submitted my dissertation in a block of cheese. The text was printed on the cheese. Interpretations?
lgarciaportela.bsky.social
Obviously, it is degraded, at least if you assume that you have control over your life but no control over your dreams
lgarciaportela.bsky.social
Degraded in comparison to what? I’d rather dream 5 years (without pain) than die. Simply because I know what dreaming feels like but not dying (and I cannot go back from a dead state, I assume)

This seems right to me, & could also be an argument against the tiresome 'great man' theory of history: "Against two-tier philosophy" open.substack.com/pub/helendec... The article on blandness by @axdouglas.bsky.social linked to in the piece is also very interesting.

I was amazed to see that, in Switzerland, cars stop even if you are jaywalking. In Spain jaywalking is very common, but obv no one stops. They expect you to adapt your pace not to be killed... In Switzerland is the opposite!
lgarciaportela.bsky.social
Do they want, really? That’s something that worries me a lot. The pressure to do something along those lines seems so high because it is hype atm.

Nothing wrong with that except for the awkward situation when I speak with Spanish students at the university, most of which come from well off families
lgarciaportela.bsky.social
Fun fact: Since I do not use Spanish in formal contexts anymore (except when I write in Spanish), my default Spanish jargon is my most informal one, which is the kind of working-class slang used in my neighbourhood.
