I've built myself a website, which includes a list of journals for animal rights philosophers to submit to (organised by publisher), a couple of syllabi, my essay writing guide for political philosophy students, & articles that philosophers say have changed their minds: stevecooke.org

As for this - in other words the government would rather we offshore our operations instead of generating jobs and exports in a high productivity sector in the UK. I despair...

Who looks around themselves, considers the likes of Trump, Putin, Farage, the AFD, disinformation, conspiracies, societal division, distrust etc. and concludes: ‘what this world needs right now is fewer people studying the arts, humanities, & social sciences’?

More politicians who don’t value education unless it makes them rich. Why do we have to endure this recycled ‘rip-off degrees’ narrative every single year? It’s as lazy as it is wrongheaded, but this time it comes with an added dash authoritarian paternalism. inews.co.uk/news/politic...
He continued: "I have long thought that in some cases, university actually degrades young people. It gives them too much freedom at a time when they don't know what to do with it, blunts the work ethic and gets them into bad habits."

Constant, morale-sapping, self-doubting rejection throughout their careers is one thing that all but the luckiest/most talented academics, no matter how supposedly senior they are, share with each other! I rather liked this advice about staying positive regardless - I just wish I could follow it!
‘Stay true to yourself – and fly closer to the sun’: what I’ve learned from 50 years of rejection
As a writer, I have been rejected thousands of times, and it initially led to shock, denial and anger. Then I accepted it. Here’s what you can gain from doing so too

That can happen when you convince yourself that the only way to preserve your precious manly essence is to eat nothing but beef and salt.

I can heartily recommend Laura's brilliant new article - innovative, creative and hopeful!

I've got a new article out @historyworkshop.org.uk. It argues for history as a form of intergenerational friendship.
History, like friendship, can be a politically powerful way of talking and thinking across time, and can connect past, present, and future struggle ✊

Leicester is where I live now, and you are correct. This is one the most diverse, multicultural cities on the planet. Sadly, it has suffered from some problems recently (since Brexit), but every one of those has begun with people from outside of it deliberately stoking tensions.

The repulsive racists who forced that family out are the real people Jenrick is trying to appeal to.
stevecooke.org
I’m too busy berating myself for my own to notice yours.
stevecooke.org
Robert Jenrick can take his bullshit racist concerns about ‘integration’ and shove them. And so can everyone else pitching in to defend him & pretend it’s a legitimate concern coming from a good place. Is it hell.
stevecooke.org
Eventually, the family was forced out by the level of racism. They needed a policy escort while leaving. Locals came out of their houses to stand on the street & cheer as they left. It was one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever seen. Just in case you were wondering about integration in the UK.

A decade ago, I lived on a rough estate in Salford. One of the houses on the street behind mine was given to a black family by the council. They then suffered weeks of vandalism, abuse, & threats.

Tell be about it - not something I need when I’m about to lose three-five weeks of pay. The moment I started needing varifocals my optician bills became ugly.

Compulsory redundancies. I expect we’ll move on to pay in the new year.

I’m sorry, but I just don’t think some thieves nicking diesel from a military base needs to spark a national panic. This sort of thing has been going on for decades.

Ordinarily, I would be procrastinating. Unfortunately, I can‘t really get on with properly procrastinating until I’m no longer on strike.

These reactionaries are basically a worse version of the climate-denying farmers’ party (the Farmer-Citizen Movement/BBB) that joined that racist coalition in the Netherlands.

As soon as you study this field, you see these weird conspiracies popping up all the time: global elites are conspiring to force us to eat insects & cultured meat. It’s deeply odd & disturbing.
stevecooke.org
“Using the mantra of NetZero, government policy is to eliminate livestock & for people to eat lab meat, protein powder, plant-based meat substitutes & insects.” Study after study has shown the same right-wing responses to lab grown-meat. It’s part of a neophobic/disgust-based right-wing psychology.
stevecooke.org
So much of the language in there is emblematic of the reactionary right. Just one example is the response to lab-grown meat.

This was published the day after the Heaton Park terrorist attack. I find its grim combination of antisemitism, conspiracy fictions and agrarian populism deeply worrying, as this is how it all kicked off a century ago. 🧵

Spoiler: it won’t. Still, I do almost admire the ability of Oxford to pull in cash on the back of whatever the latest tech-fad rich people are excited about.

A surprising number of people on the picket line are using the strike as an opportunity to get dental work done (I am one of them). I think we all put off lots of basic care during the teaching term. Next up, eye test.
