Why did DEED change its tune??

Because 👏of 👏you👏

Your 600 comments. Your relentless push for transparency, fact-based findings, and accountability.

Alaska's kids were at risk of losing lunch programs, after school activities, family supports, and you stood up.

I couldn't be more thankful.

Alaska's education department is asking the state school board not to pass a controversial regulation change that could limit school funding from local governments, instead asking for it to be sent back to the department for further refinement.
Alaska education officials ask for another delay on proposed change to funding regulations
Local officials warn that services and funds provided to school districts by boroughs and municipal governments could be cut if the state’s proposed regulation passes.

I'll be speaking on Oct 18 and I will highlight that nobody has a "mandate," and especially when they only received 49.8% of the popular vote.

Ignoring the concerns, needs, interests, and wants of over 50% of the electorate means you aren't governing - you are dictating.

Violations of the Hatch Act carry no statute of limitations and can results in fines or imprisonment or both. 5/5
lgtobin.bsky.social
The Hatch Act DOES NOT apply to specific civilians in the military nor the President or VP, but there are specific caveats that prohibit intimidation, commands, or coercion of federal government employees engaging or not engaging in any political activity. 4/5

Over the years, amendments loosen restricts preventing public employees from running for local elected office while maintaining strict prohibitions on public employees engaging in partisan political activities on government time. 3/5

Driven by widespread allegations that local Democrats were using federal employees to influence congressional races, Senator (D-NM) introduced the bill while Senator Morris Sheppard (D-TX) investigated.

While the allegations were never verified, Roosevelt signed the act into law in 1939. 2/5

The 1939 law was created in the wake of a scandal.

On today's #sundaystory: The Hatch Act

Passed in 1939 and named after NM Senator Carl Hatch (D), the "Act to Prevent Pernicious Political Activities" prohibits civil and executive branch federal employees from engaging in political activities and ensures promotions are based on merit. 1/🧵

After listening to EK & TNC, I am left with this:

“Now let us begin. Now let us re-dedicate ourselves to the long and bitter, but beautiful, struggle for a new world.” MLK, Jr.

The destination was never in question and I refuse to change the goalposts simply because we are behind.

Um...I believe our President just announce to the UN that global warming/climate change is "the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world"...so...

Nope. Can't even spin that to be snarky nor funny. We are doomed.

💯

Along with the inherent wealth transfer from the poorest to the richest codified in HR 1 and the cancellation of hundreds of millions in federal education funding, it is not a huge leap to think this is all orchestrated against specific socioeconomic classes.

Today, the work to build a more perfect union continues, just like it has since the founding of this great experiment in representative democracy. 11/11

In 2025, Pres Trump issued an Executive Order effectively prohibiting all DEI policies at public schools and began canceling or withholding federal funding from private schools unless they removed their DEI policies. 10/11

The subsequent backlash has grown in severity.

In 2023, the Supreme Court banned affirmative action in college admissions. 9/11

By 2010, the Supreme Court legalizes same sex marriage, a majority step in equity policies.

But our union was still not perfect.

After the murder of George Floyd, an increasing number of companies and schools began to promote their anti-discrimination practices (collectively called DEI). 8/11

On January 4, 1975, the Secretary of the Interior authorized the Indian Self Determination and Education Act, formally dismantling federal sovereignty termination policies.

And in 1990, Congress passed the American with Disabilities Act. 7/11

But again, the backlash was aggressive, and states like CA, WA, MI, and others prohibited use of affirmative action in public employment and higher education.

Throughout the 1970s, advocates fought for the Equal Rights Amendment with women like Shirley Chisholm leading the charge. 6/11

A full century after the first attempts (Freedman's Bureau) to address blatant discrimination against Black Americans, Pres Lyndon Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act that barred employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex and national origin. 5/11

In 1948, President Truman signed EO 9981 which desegregated the military. Many attribute a major catalyst for the EO to an unprovoked attack by South Carolinian police on Isaac Woodard, a Black WW II veteran.

The attack left Woodard permanently disabled and blind. 4/11

By 1920, White women secured the right to vote, a significant step in inclusion and the passage of the 1944 GI Bill offered a pathway for White veterans to build wealth, a massive step in income inequality. 3/11

The Freedman's Bureau helped recently freed slaves in obtaining the basic necessities and jobs.

But in 1867, Pres Andrew Johnson vetoed enforcement of the Freedman's Bureau, saying it "discriminated against White people." 2/11

Today's Sunday story focuses on the history of DEI...

Following the Emancipation Proclamation (1863), Southern states began enacting policies that collectively became known as Jim Crow laws.

In an effort to counter, Congress established the "Freedman's Bureau." 1/🧵
