Whoops! (RNZ article on Restore Passenger Rail charges being dropped)
The jury was dismissed and a retrial ordered. But on Tuesday the Crown confirmed it would not be pursuing the case and asked that the charges be withdrawn. can we please change to: Judge Jan Kelly, however, agreed with the defence and dismissed the charges. All four defendants faced charges of endangering transport - which carried a maximum 14-year jail term - related to three protests in October 2022 that called for passenger rail services to be restored.

Swarbrick What, then, about the postgraduate student allowance? Have you given any consideration to reinstating that? Hipkins Oh, yes, certainly. Probably more in the last term than this term, because it wasn’t a commitment we made for this term. It was a commitment we made in the last term, and then COVID rolled along and we all remember what happened there. We weren’t in a position to make a commitment to do that for this term, but it certainly remains something I think the Government would like to do. I can’t put a specific timetable on that. Swarbrick Do you have updated costs? Have you received updated advice on what it would take to reinstate the postgraduate allowance now? Hipkins Not off the top of my head. I don’t think the costs would have shifted significantly, but I don’t have that off the top of my head.
