The government's recently published Methane Action Plan could be better, but it's a welcome step. It now needs to use it to bolster ambition on methane at #COP30

#GAevent | This week the government will release its climate and growth plan.

Will it show people how climate action = warmer homes, cleaner air, better transport, thriving nature and good jobs?

Join our webinar next Wednesday w/ Green Alliance experts to see if the plan meets the moment.

This is a message of hope at a crucial time.

Tackling methane emissions could help us avoid overshooting the 1.5C target and pull the emergency brake on climate change.

We can still turn the tide and protect people and the planet, but only through deliberate and immediate action.

🚨 Hidden health crisis: #methane isn't just a global warming problem, it's fuelling deadly air pollution.

Ground-level ozone from methane kills ~1,500/yr in the UK. Yet, unlike other pollutants, methane still lacks reduction targets in air quality policy.

Read our solutions below.

Is carbon capture and storage good value for money?

The £21.7bn committed to CCS isn't prioritised to hard-to-decarbonise sectors and will be 75% funded by consumers.

Why is such a vital industry so often ignored when it comes to industrial strategy?

@liamkhardy.bsky.social, head of research, discusses why the chemical's industry needs more attention:
Overlooked and undervalued, the chemical industry needs attention

The chemicals sector touches most parts of our economy, and has a long and successful history in the UK. Yet, it's value is underappreciated and its pollution problems ignored.

"None of the barriers to industrial electrification in the UK are insurmountable".

In The Chemical Engineer, @liamkhardy.bsky.social, head of research, details why electrification beats CCS or biomass for decarbonising heavy industry, and what government and industry need to do to make it happen.
Viewpoint: Electrification Should be the First Choice to Power Industry
While many industries have hidden behind the “hard to abate” label, advances mean deep emissions cuts are possible across most sectors. Green Alliance’s Liam Hardy says the key now is to ensure indust...

In our latest blog, @ruthchambers.bsky.social highlights the worrying trend of governments curtailing our ability to protest about their policies or inaction.

The government must reset its approach, repeal draconian laws and bring us back into compliance with the Aarhus Convention.
The right to protest on the environment must be restored
Five years ago, I reflected on the role that civil disobedience and protests have played in the environmental movement and the worrying direction of travel prompted by the backlash to Extinction Rebellion. What has happened since September 2020?

A small step for the government, but a giant leap for our long running @green-alliance.org.uk campaign for greater ambition on #methane emissions.
Thanks Ed, Kerry and DESNZ officials for seeing this opportunity to once again lead the world on #climateaction
🎉📢 Excellent news for climate action: The government has committed to a methane action plan - and in time for #COP30 this year!

Last night, we attended a reception where we heard encouraging words from Ed Miliband MP, @wopkehoekstra.ec.europa.eu , the COP30 President, Kerry McCarthy MP + more.

A big week for methane thinking at Green Alliance!
See this thread for our new briefing on landfill methane capture, coverage of this on the BBC by @drdavidgk.bsky.social (incl a hardhat showing how tiny my head is), a new blog from @rosie-allen.bsky.social and our big report from yesterday.
🚨 Our new briefing highlights a looming crisis: renewable electricity subsidies for landfill methane capture end in 2027.

Without action, we'll lose green electricity for 1.1M homes and methane emissions could surge by 88k tonnes annually - equal to 500k more dairy cows.

Landfill methane emissions: the impact of losing the renewable electricity subsidy
This briefing outlines the urgent need for government action to extend or replace the ROC scheme, invest in landfill gas innovation and publish a National Methane Action Plan.

It's been a long time coming, but I'm pleased to see our new report released today.
It explores in detail the interventions we could be implementing in the UK to tackle #methane emissions in this crucial decade.
Methane is the emergency brake we need to slow warming, and the UK govt must step up.
Cutting methane emissions fast is the best way to avoid reaching dangerous climate tipping points.

Our latest report outlines a cross sector plan to cut UK methane emissions soon and lead on this global emergency brake on climate change.

It’s good that plans are being made to find new uses for the site, but these have started late and without much transparency. Workers and local people should be at the heart of the conversation.
