I worked at a place where we were once told that our most important job was to be "good stewards for our shareholders." This was shortly before our health insurance was radically worsened and the company got in trouble for violating banking laws.

I guess that's one way to identify at risk kids with parents who practice coercive control.

That movie (and the Wachowskis) deserved far, far better than to have its symbolism stolen by MRAs. It's still worth watching, but I can understand why you wouldn't.

I had a moment of absolute panic until I remembered Canada.

Afternoon, Womble! Just finished Hemlock and Silver by T. Kingfisher, which was exactly the escapism I needed. Fantastic world, grumpy middle aged woman with an unusual interest as the main character, and exactly the right amount of peril. Comforting in a Terry Pratchett kind of way.

This is exactly right.

Techbros created machines that produce infinite, nauseating flattery because that is how they believe they should be treated by other humans. They get very angry when other people (especially women or others who they believe should be *grateful*) don't act that way.

It is morally wrong to want a computer to be sentient. If you owned a sentient thing, you would be a slaver. If you want sentient computers to exist, you just want to create a new kind of slavery. The ethics are as simple as that. Sorry if this offends

Even though I'm not an author, I was talking with a group of them last weekend at Necronomicon, and none of them had heard them about the settlement. So I passed the info along.

This really needs to get publicity!

From the people who enabled this regime in order to take away women's autonomy and reproductive freedom.

It's here!

Roadkill is out in the world. I can't in good conscience recommend it to all readers. A sad and angry book. 90% of the animal characters are dead at the outset & the humans don't fare much better. But if you're in the mood for an unconventional eco-horror experience, links in comments!
Book cover for Roadkill by Helen Whistberry showing a bird, raccoon, and snake skeleton sprawled across a dark asphalt highway with yellow dotted line. The title is in large yellow letters that have blood streaming down them and out onto the road and animals. There is a dark and stormy sky in the background. Black and white illustration of the head and neck of a howling wolf in profile. Its mouth is wide open and a dark liquid is trickling from its mouth, snout, and eye.

I'm so glad it was silly, because that meta algorithm can 100% be a bad ex's enabler.
