A lot of martial arts teachers and facilitators think direct input equals direct output. Just tell them what to do, and they will perform it. If that were the case, we'd all be the masters of everything because we've been told lots of things our entire lives. We'd be master chefs, speak multiple languages, good at every sport, and play lots of instruments. Teaching isn't that easy or straightforward.

We talked about training frequency determining the approach. A curriculum for someone coming 6 days a week will look very different than someone who comes once a week—or in the case of free training clubs, once every few months. But what about training approaches that are designed for children with the assumption that they will train daily for decades or a lifetime? Is that the right approach for adult beginners who train casually? An approach for an irregular schedule for adult bodies in a shorter timescale should look drastically different IF those differences occurred to instructors. But if it doesn't, you have a lifelong approach meant for young plastic bodies and minds, being taught to adult beginners with shorter and irregular timescales.

It’s really hard to get good at anything in Empire. Capitalism strips time, exhausts the body, and drains attention—then blames you for not thriving. The LMA approach isn’t “good because it’s radical.” It’s radical because it produces better results. Safety → ease → perception → real learning → real skill. Most systems force you to grind harder inside the same conditions that break you. LMA changes the conditions so you can actually grow.

Adult beginners/learners is a fairly new phenomenon in martial arts and combat sports. Pedagogy itself means teaching method for kids, like pediatrician means child doctor. So without a teaching approach for adults, teachers who began seeing an influx of adult beginners defaulted to the one place where adults are still beginners—the military. This is paired with the first Western martial arts teachers and practitioners being military chuds bringing over things they learned while occupying Asian countries. It's not old school or authentic because adults didn't exist in that old school as learners. The adults that existed were the near finished products of those who came up in that system since childhood. Adult learners can almost never learn the "authentic" art bc the authentic art was meant for child learners. What you think is "authenticity" is often orientalism, romanticism, toxic masculinity, and projection.

No one does a one-time strength class for people who've never lifted before, promising they can now compete in a strength contest. You won't see an equivalent in arts, music, or sports. A college degree isn't a one-time class, and neither is a trade. No one does a one-time basketball class for people who have never played basketball, promising they can dunk or make baskets at will. Yet there is this equivalent in self-defense, which is more unpredictable, high stakes, and escalated than anything I've already mentioned. But since these sorts of self-defense classes are offered, it is now normal to believe those promises are achievable in an hour despite not having that logic for ANYTHING ELSE even when they're easier and lower stakes. No one will believe someone who has never cooked or been in a kitchen can now make any dish at will from a one-time class. But the consequences are low, it's a bad meal that took too long and made a mess. Yet people suspended their disbelief when their life is on the line. This is called motivated reasoning. You suspend disbelief BECAUSE it's your life. Capitalism will exploit that and tell you I'm the liar, not the people promising you the world in an hour.

Most of the countries that were colonial powers were cap- italist countries and the last bul- wark of capitalism today is Ameri- ca and it's impossible for a white person today to believe in capital- ism and not believe in racism. You can't have capitalism without racism. And if you find a person without racism and you happen to get that person into a conversa- tion and they have a philosophy that makes you sure they don't have this racism in their outlook, usually they're socialists or their political philosophy is socialism.

Wholesome feedback about the Liberation Martial Arts online curriculum
If had LMA 10 years ago, I could've been really fucking good by now. Ifl had LMA 15 years ago, HS and college wrestling would've felt more like a leisurely drive and less like a mad dash in rush hour to get to my destination on time. Ifl had LMA 20 years ago, I could've turned my weaknesses into strengths instead of just hiding them with the strengths /| already had. But I have LMA now, and that's enough to make me look forward to the next 20 years

Cults is a loaded term because people immediately think of strange religious cults with death pacts. It also assumes you need a powerful leader when it doesn't need a leader; it's more about the behavior of members. So if you instead think more broadly about negative or unhealthy groups, many of us might be in them

USians are so uncomfortable with grief, death, dying, emotion, and vulnerability that any picture of Asians mourning and grieving with their entire body is a sign of propaganda bc in the US you're not supposed to acknowledge grief. It's shameful, backward, wrong. In a "free country," you're supposed to be emotionless, and mass killings are supposed to be normal and every person should be prepared to take someone else's life and have the means to do so. Acknowledging the realities of death is somehow undemocratic, while killing without remorse or humanity is freedom. Yeah, it's Asians who are propagandized 🙄

Comparing the US to Nazi Germany isn't even apt because the US was doing genocide and apartheid before Nazi Germany. Furthermore, the US is far more powerful than Germany ever was because the Nazis were stopped. Up to date, genocides committed or backed by the US have never been stopped. Israel is only successful with their genocide because of the backing of the US, which makes the genocide a de facto US genocide. The US is the actual engine and without the US, Israel would not last. Without the US, there would be no genocide. Without the material power of the US, Israel is meaningless. Israel didn't bootstrap its way to power. It's a child writing checks with its parents' money. The parent is the real source of the problem. Comparing the US to weaker non-Western countries is just racist avoidance and deflection. The buck stops with the US. The US isn't acting like another country, it's being itself. Since it's settler colonial inception, it's ALWAYS been the problem. There is no one worse to compare because they've always succeeded at their evils at the greatest magnitudes, and they're still going. It's not past tense. As the most powerful unstopped evil empire that is both past and unfortunately still the present. That's a uniquely US trait.

A self-defense collective with people showing up inconsistently won't have people progressing far enough to actually defend themselves. Then it's just self-defense in theory but not in practice. There might be people who are good but they got good training somewhere else, which again reinforces that this club and you aren't living up to the promise, and is tacitly saying, if you want to get good and train with people taking this seriously, go somewhere else.

Lukas Unger 11h Subscribe Somebody really needs to write an article about how the increasing impact of American fascism at home instantly turns liberals towards racialized fears that Trump is bringing 'asiatic barbarism' to the West, thinly veiled as political critique. Trump is Mao, Trump is Putin, Trump is a mad despot, Trump is imposing North Korean 'totalitarianism' on glorious American democracy, and so on. It seems totally incoherent until you take the racism behind it seriously; then it all makes sense. What is especially telling is that the average liberal responds to this being pointed out to them with conspiracies about how you are trying to sabotage their imaginary resistance movement.

Margaret Kimberley @freedomrideblog Yes, I'm repeating myself but I must. North Korea is portrayed as being the worst country on earth. Every crime and atrocity is referred to as being "like North Korea." But who bombs hospitals and uses starvation as a weapon? We should describe evil doing as being "like Israel." Korean Fury 3h Liberation Martial Arts People in the Imperial Core project their own evils as always being inherently Asian because they either have not come to terms with US and Israel's crimes or defend it. They're either an outright pro-genocider or they're like "Free Palestine, but.." They just don't accept that it's genocide or that genocide committed by the West is never as bad as whatever they think the East is doing. Anytime the West stays consistent with its historical march of fascism and colonialism, its always somehow acting more Asian and no matter how vile they act, the Asian goalpost keeps moving and they'll never actually be worse than Asia. At most, they're acting like Asia but never fully at their level of evil. That logic means acting Western means the epitome of good. That's why evil is never associated with the West and always the East. That's literally white supremacy logic. For Koreans, this also means they'll never have self-determination to have peace in their own country or not because not only the US government but the will of its people will never allow it.
