Thanks, Teon! Hope all is well with you!

Thank you!!! Yes, it’s a lot, but so far so good. Luckily folks at UT and Berkeley have been very helpful with the (many!) logistics.

Looking especially for folks with interest in computational/systems neuroscience, language development, neural networks/ML, population coding, intracranial recordings, clinical/translational neuroscience.

Excited to announce that my lab has moved to UC Berkeley Dept of Neuroscience and Dept of Statistics! I will be continuing to collaborate with colleagues and students in TX at UT Austin and Baylor College of Medicine, and will start new collabs in the Bay. Will be taking new grad students this fall!

Hi, I have not been affected but have colleagues who have, if you’re willing to share with me so I can show them I’d appreciate it! I hope it works out for you!

From various sources, it appears that the plan with regard to NIH is that all Institute and Center Directors (as opposed to now where it is just the NIH Director and the NCI Director) would become essentially political appointees as would most or all division directors.

HAPPY 75th, NSF!

We’re celebrating this milestone by highlighting some of NSF’s most transformative accomplishments—innovations that have shaped our world and continue to drive progress in health, technology, the environment, and beyond.

Read on 🧵(1/11):
A chocolate cake with red and white decorations and lit candles shaped as the number 75. Bold text reads: ‘The NSF Turns 75 Today. What has it done over the past 7 decades?’ The background is a celebratory red with a spray-paint texture.

Now they are gutting NSF. This is radical destruction.

The Trump goal is to end scientific research in America. Our sense is that few people, even inside the government, have actually grappled with this reality.

$25k grants for those who:

1. are working on research on STEM and education (including AI and CS, graduate education and MSIs, and scholarship that aims to reduce inequality), and

2. have had a recently terminated or cancelled grant from NSF.

I have reviewed many times for #NSF grants and I see the innovation, technical challenges, and important ideas put forth by early trainees and established investigators alike. Halting NSF funding (current and future) is short sighted and helps no one.
libertysays.bsky.social
My 1st experience working in science was at UNAVCO, an #NSF funded geosciences org. now part of @earthscope.org. So much technical knowledge I use in my neuroscience (!) lab was from that early experience. My PhD was then funded by #NSFGRFP. Ending NSF funding will devastate careers and innovation.

It's not just Columbia, it's not just DEI, and it's not just biomedical research: Trump's war on universities has frozen crucial science at institutions like Princeton, Cornell, Northwestern, and more. Our @nature.com team spoke to some of the affected scientists: www.nature.com/articles/d41...
How Trump’s attack on universities is putting research in peril
Scientists have little information as the US government freezes and cancels their funding.

hi, cis folks!

if we *are* going to talk ACA, RFK's HHS proposed a rule to remove *all trans care* from ACA essential health benefit status.

~25mil people are insured by ACA & if 1% are trans, that's 250,000 people who'd lose access to care.

that's bad! take 2 minutes to stand with trans people.🧵

What this administration is teaching Universities is that even if you comply - punish students for protests, ban masks, remove DEI from websites and classes - they will still defund you and try to break you apart. Basically, there is no point in complying.

But one wrinkle is the role of the Heschl’s gyrus. It clearly has a role in responding to speech+sound, but stimulation and ablation studies show that it can be resected without changes to speech. How to reconcile these findings? I try to address this in the commentary, but would love more thoughts!

Overall, I report that Binder et al’s results are largely concordant with the invasive and noninvasive neuroimaging literature showing localization of functions for speech perception across the auditory cortex, including representations of manner features, voicing, and pitch
