Just a librarian who doesn't currently work in a library, but who loves her some books, cats, and a couple of hu-mans too(also anime and BL, forgot those 2 until now)! Will be on less right now, Mom passed on Turkey Day, be back later...

Hello all peeps, what are we calling the collective version of ourselves on here? Blueskyers? Bluesky people? Blueskies? Anyways, was wondering if anyone had info on this teddy bear, to be added to what little I found out about it? All info greatly appreciated!!!

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

it’s for exactly this reason that my library network’s catalog system does not retain patron borrowing data, or even permit the creation of linked “family” library accounts.

the “free” in “free public library” means, among other things, “free from government interference.”
Officials in Tennessee aren't just banning books, they're now demanding information on who checked out contested (largely LGBTQ+) books, including names, addresses, and "household composition."

A librarian who was given the directive has come forward asking for whistleblower protections.
Tennessee whistleblower says library board chair sought private data as part of state's book purge
A First Amendment expert told The Advocate that there are "huge" legal implications stemming from the situation.

Now is a really great time to remember the Connecticut Four

No librarian worth their salt would EVER disclose patron information

here are Ranganathan’s 5 Laws of Library Science.

1. Books are for use.
2. Every reader their book.
3. Every book its reader.
4. Save the time of the reader.
5. A library is a growing organism.

they can be read as a directive for technical efficiency. i read them as an ethical commitment. 📚

"The reign of Mitch McConnell is over" is a sentence I have been waiting to be true my entire life.

That isn't an exaggeration.

The man has been in office longer than I have been alive.

I regret that we aren't living back home and able to vote in an election, finally, without him on the ballot.

my library's policy.

Librarians like to say that book bans interfere with parents' direction of their children's reading. But also, by letting minors be patrons, librarians do not collude with parents' control over their children's reading.

The freedom to read is radically democratic. 📚

Let's talk about books and the public trust.

Something that is easy to forget, in these days of barcode-scanning / auto-adjust pricing on third-party platforms for pennies plus shipping:

Booksellers are not merely people who sell some popular books in a competitive market.

It is difficult for some to use a library voice, to whisper. THAT’S OKAY. You belong in the library, we will work together. I admire YOU 😊

Take a look, it’s in a book 💛

The wonderful writers @sn-media-guild.bsky.social have been waiting on a fair contract almost long enough to gestate a baby elephant (620 days).

They have neither a contract NOR a baby elephant.

All they want is a contract, to be paid for their amazing expertise.

After 560 days of bargaining, the Science News Media Guild (@sn-media-guild.bsky.social) is demanding and fair contract NOW!
