Embracing globalization, Pedro and Ana grow peas not to eat, but to sell — exporting them to London, where, unlike in Guatemala, people love their peas. As I walked with Pedro through his family’s abundant fields at harvest time, he declared, “It’s like I’m walking through money.”

Globalization in the Developing World—Lessons from My Travels in Guatemala 

Smart modern aid programs (many of which were once supported by USAID) recognize that small farmers in the developing world can be empowered to join the free market. Guatemala's sugar & coffee industries are good examples:

In 2017, I helped celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by producing the “Rick Steves’ Luther and the Reformation" TV special — my gift to about 10,000 Lutheran churches across the USA that have this in their libraries.

Halloween ghouls can be pretty scary — but 500 years ago, if you were a corrupt Church trying to keep the Bible away from people who didn't speak Latin (in other words, regular people), Martin Luther was scary, too.
