Guidebook author, TV & radio host, business owner, Lutheran, and NORML Board Member. Fanatically positive and militantly optimistic.
As the years go by and the last eyewitnesses to the Holocaust pass away, it's more important than ever to keep that tragic memory alive — and to remember the stark lessons of what happens when a society gives power to hate and racism.

Enshrined on a Dachau memorial is a message from Hitler's victims: “Forgive, but never forget.”

I have an ethic that virtually every @ricksteveseurope.bsky.social tour through Germany includes a visit to a concentration camp memorial. When you travel thoughtfully, the impact changes you.

It’s the “season of love and giving”…but this year, doesn’t it seem more like a “season of fear and taking”? Like many of you, I’ve been saddened by the human impact of draconian government budget cuts and how angry many housed Americans are at unhoused Americans.

Smart modern development aid (which used to be funded by USAID) creates small-business owners like Pedro and Ana, who are proud and hardworking capitalists.

Embracing globalization, Pedro and Ana grow peas not to eat, but to sell — exporting them to London, where, unlike in Guatemala, people love their peas. As I walked with Pedro through his family’s abundant fields at harvest time, he declared, “It’s like I’m walking through money.”

In 2017, I helped celebrate the 500th anniversary of the Reformation by producing the “Rick Steves’ Luther and the Reformation" TV special — my gift to about 10,000 Lutheran churches across the USA that have this in their libraries.

Fellow Americans!

I’m happy to announce that, thanks to you, I’m sending $100,000 to the American Civil Liberties Union (@aclu.org) to help them defend something that truly Makes America Great: our civil liberties.

Civil liberties are under attack in the USA like never before. It’s scary, it’s real — and that’s why I hope to raise $100,000 this week to empower the American Civil Liberties Union (@aclu.org). But I’ll need your help.

In my public television special “The Story of Fascism in Europe” (www.ricksteves.com/fascism), we learn from Europeans whose families lived through fascism that a strong democracy requires vigilant and engaged citizens. We are all participants, we are all responsible, and freedom isn’t guaranteed.
