My photo shows a small bronze sculpture of a cat’s head with almond-shaped eyes inlaid with warm orange-coloured amber. The head is upright and alert with large pointed ears. Holes at the base of the ears indicate they once held earrings, now missing. There is a gold scarab on the forehead. The bronze is smooth and dark grey with some greenish discolouration particularly around the base of the neck. Fine incised parallel horizontal lines inside the ears and across the muzzle are suggestive of fur and whiskers. The head sits on a stone base inside a museum display case.

The cave entrance is in the mid distance with two figures standing looking out towards a distant ship. Between them and the ship there is first a 'beach' of ice before the sea itself. The ship could be up to 800 metres away What makes the photo so special is that where the figures are at the cave entrance there is a band of very white snow and ice (contrasting with the comparatively dark inside of the cave) that creates a stark framework in which the men and the ship are captured. It is made even more dramatic by the fact that the cave entrance is at least 30 metres high and is in the shape of a distorted elipse with the tail sloping off to the right at the top of the elipse The photo being in monochrome in a largely white environment makes the photographers skill all the more laudable

My photo shows a slightly ovoid-shaped tool knapped from yellow-tinged rock crystal. It is mounted for display against a grey background. Described as a scraper (racloir) by the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale, it measures 6 x 3.3 x 1.5 cm. It was recovered from a Mousterian (Neanderthal) level in the Abri Des Merveilles rockshelter in France. The rock shelter was excavated by the American School of Prehistoric Research for a number of seasons from 1924 onwards, led by George Grant MacCurdy who documented that this rock crystal tool (and six others) were excavated from the lower level of the shelter together with a lithic assemblage (flint handaxes, scrapers and points) identified as Mousterian i.e. associated with Neanderthals. He suggested the original source of the rock crystal was some 90 miles north of the Merveilles rockshelter “near to and beyond the headwaters of the Vézère in the direction of Limousin and Puy-de-Dome” He suggested the rock crystal was either brought to the cave, or was carried away from its source by the river Vézère and then picked up from the riverbed by neanderthals. The info label at the Musée d’Archéologie Nationale reads: ‘Neanderthals were the first to show their interest in non-utilitarian objects: collection and transport of fossils and minerals, use of dyes such as ochre or haematite, choice of aesthetic raw materials for cut tools, such as rock crystal from Sergeac or opal jasper from Fontmaure’

Aughnacliffe Dolmen • Longford

A lagoon triggerfish patrols there patch closely. The specie (Rhinecanthus aculeatus), called the Picasso triggerfish, or the Picassofish. Both sexes guard territories sometimes for years and are known to bite unwelcome visitors.
