We take this for granted now - that the first couple will walk at least part of the way down Pennsylvania Avenue on Inauguration Day. But the Carters were the first. It was spontaneous and sent a powerful message to so many, including me and my sisters as we watched. Carter was a real person.
Hard to explain the excitement I felt as a teenager when Carter ran for President. He was different in every way from candidates we had seen before and seemed the antidote to Nixon and then Ford. When he & Roslyn jumped out of the car to walk down Pennsylvania Ave for inauguration we were thrilled.
