I don't expect anyone to be perfect and not make mistakes. What I expect is that mistakes should be acknowledged and corrected (if at all possible). Which, as you note, is what Biden did.

Yep. It seems like a vicious circle. If you're not so down that you have no hope, you'll grab for any bit of hope that's offered. Filthy con men like Trump and his ilk take advantage, and make it worse. And they prey on your misery and find someone for you to blame (I dunno, women and immigrants?)
