The Periwinkle photographed here growing at the ruins of a traditional Tamil cottage is a happy-go-lucky small subshrub. The plant's leaves are glossy, dark green, oval-shaped, and arranged oppositely along the stem. It grows in adverse conditions such as rain, heat and dust, and as in this photo, can be quite often seen growing out of the crevices of walls. It is a source of important allopathic medicinal alkaloids, including vincristine and vinblastine used to treat certain types of cancer. In Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine the extracts of its roots and shoots, though poisonous, have been used against diabetes, malaria and Hodgkin's lymphoma.
