Maybe, but imho DC has mostly been like this for a while, depending on your neighborhood. except for maybe the traumatized people

DC right now feels like Beirut a few years ago - the best restaurants are doing fine and all the others outside the bubble are dying, the streets are oddly empty, a lot of people are just traumatized, and the government and security forces seem either helpless or actively hostile.

I have a friend who owns a restaurant. He says tourism and travel to DC in recent months has devastated many restaurants in DC. So, yes, Trump is lying. Again.

It was a year ago today that @51st.news sent out its first newsletter. Since then, my colleagues have been working to build a sustainable local news operation to cover D.C. the way we always wanted to cover it. Thanks to everyone who has read, subscribed, and donated! Onwards!

We need a bigger national spotlight on this building raid, fam. Agents dropped from helicopters onto the roof. Citizens and non-citizens alike were dragged from their homes in the night. People who weren't kidnapped during the raid had their belongings seized after the fact. This is madness.

"Jones, 27, is among the residents left at 7500 S. South Shore Drive who are trying to piece together what remains after an early morning, high-powered federal immigration raid led to the arrests of dozens of their neighbors at their South Shore apartment building."
Massive immigration raid on Chicago apartment building leaves residents reeling: 'I feel defeated'
The Department of Homeland Security said federal agents with Border Patrol, the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested 37 people in the raid.

Some relief for D.C.: A new revenue estimate from the city's CFO shows that revenue for the fiscal year ending tonight is $208 million higher than expected, and revenue for the 2026 fiscal year will be up $289 million. Plenty of folks expected the estimate to be negative.

Birdsong by Julie Flett is one of my absolute favorite books. I love it so much. My daughter used to love it when I read it to her. It's about a sweet relationship between a girl and her elderly neighbor.

I loved this interview with @heykellyjensen.bsky.social about libraries, democratizing knowledge, why smutty romance is possibly the next frontier of book bans, and more

Bothers me when people discuss Left movements in the U.S. w/out underscoring the GENERATIONS of repression, surveillance, violence directed at movements. The "Left" is so disorganized is used as a joke but I hardly ever see those same people saying 'THE LEFT WAS TARGETED & DISORGANIZED by the STATE'
