I have an urge to trace a random historical figure’s family tree tonight. Not one of the major ones who have been traced in depth though. A random musician maybe or someone from the local area.

Surely I can‘t be the only genealogist that has these moments…

Hello genealogists of Bluesky! Am I right in thinking there’s an #AncestryHour tonight?

#Genealogy question: I’m fairly well-versed in palaeography & transcription, and will soon be aiming to properly analyse a fairly lengthy C14 custumal all in Latin.
Does anyone have any (as technical as you like) docs on current industry standards/presentation/publication of transcriptions? Thanks!

Trying to diversify and re-professionalise certain elements of my modus operandi at the moment, and I can’t lie… the nicer weather has been making that all way easier.

I think most of my genealogy posting can go here…

and just as well, as I seem to be getting back into my palaeographic times of life! Going to be tackling a (rather tricky!) manor account document in Latin and translating into English. Love a good passion project! #genchat

Greetings one and all! I have developed a Substack account as a slight ‘hobby on the side’ for now, but I would love some subscriptions — especially if you want regular emails about the important, crucial, upcoming issues in language, culture, and everything else.

I had a wonderful conversation with a friend living in Asia last night (where he works in an important, intercultural role).

It just reiterated my strong belief that networking across the world is CRUCIAL for us to understand where we are going wrong in our own country.

We’ve come to the end of the first week in January, and I think my immediate self-assessment is:
> I need to go out a lot more (but in a genuine way, not a ‘ugh I’m always inside’ way).
> I’ve done well at immediacy but can always improve!
> More language learning needs done.
> Less computer time!

Reading the Society of Genealogists’ newsletter about their upcoming courses in 2025 makes me realise just how much my skills in languages and research can be immensely central and useful to genealogy and I should probably acknowledge that in my work more generally…

Without downloading any new pics, where are you mentally?

Growing up and living in an environment around people who strongly believe that ‘everyone should just speak English’ and where ‘why are you speaking foreign’… and being someone actively working to promote multiculturalism and multilingualism is a HARD constant battle.

Bluesky feels like (at least for the time being) it’s probably quite a neat place for me to put longer threads that ultimately have no value other than ‘it feels nice to do’.

So with that: it randomly came to my mind earlier, so here are my 8 probable [current] #DesertIslandDiscs tracks.

I’ve mentioned it on the other app but 2025 will definitely be a time for me to delve back into the world of genealogy! I think I occasionally underestimated how advanced my genealogical knowledge and expertise, and how much my specific skills can contribute to genealogy! #Genchat

Love how I just begun a geocaching message with « Kia ora! Tino pai ki te whakarongo mai i a koe »!

@ridavies.bsky.social Riannon!!! Hello!! It feels like it has been way too long 😭

Something I did occasionally on the other site during its peak time was random threads that no one asked for about ridiculously niche and trivial stuff such as how Oooh-y Girls Aloud’s song ‘Something Kinda Oooh’ is.

I’m tempted to try it here too, at least whilst it’s a quiet enough place.

I spent literally about 48 hours in Birmingham and I have 20 more Likes on Feeld, I really do live in such a dull straight uninteresting town huh

Attended a quiz tournament in Birmingham. Team won the final. Went out clubbing until 5am. Had an all-round fantastic time.

Now just to prepare for Slovakia this weekend!
