I honestly think that factor ("How dare question me / question me / tell me what to do?" *hulksmash* is responsible for so much of the fascist backlash, from G*mergate to TERFism to Trump.

At first, I wasn't convinced of the connection because Lolita is a genuinely great novel. But it's great because it's a disturbing view inside the head of a self-justifying predator.

As for the argument that he's a hypocrite - he doesn't care about being inconsistent, he knows his followers will go with whatever BS he comes out with next and that demonstrates his power.

This isn't about one man, this is about an entire network of ultra wealthy people and their inner society which fosters an abuser mentality amongst all of them. Politicians like Reagan and Thatcher popularized poisonous economic policies which gave these people more power and less accountability.
