I mean I also pointed out that if the guy is so obsessed with attacks, he can look up any number of realtime attack maps and watch attack attempts happen through Internet networks.

Then I said “does anyone have a question that is not about security?” AND HE DID IT AGAIN
janeruffino.bsky.social
Oh yeah, I’m pretty sure it’s the guy who sat through a lecture I gave, kept his zoom camera off, and threatened to report me to the authorities, as well as telling me “you should be put in jail for a long time and then deported.”

I reported it to the university but they didn’t take it seriously

I’m also not making this up! This is what you’ll hear from the cable industry! I showed 1. Cable damage is common 2. It’s repaired quickly 3. The Internet routes around it. Not enough.

I do know that if you don’t look and sound a certain way, you aren’t allowed to be seen as knowing things.

I’m not saying maritime security doesn’t matter, but a lot of the most important investments are mundane things, like investing in education so there are enough skilled repair techs, securing working conditions for seafarers, smooth permitting processes, a fair regulatory environment, etc
janeruffino.bsky.social
The example I gave is that the Nordic and Baltic governments are investing in saildrones, a company based in Silicon Valley and every one of their investment rounds involves Lux Capital, specializing in autonomous weapons, with a former head of the CIA as a venture partner.

It’s fine not to accept the 50+ year-old subfield of contemporary archaeology as valid or to not be interested in it, but it’s on you if you show up and sit there for 45 minutes just to demand to know,” How does this have anything to do with normal archaeology?”(Which I actually COVERED in the talk)
janeruffino.bsky.social
I said that while I covered this all in the talk, if we ONLY view infrastructure as an attack surface, we won’t make good decisions for it, and a misplaced investment could be a risk to long-term resilience. Ditto if we only see “security” as military and state-level defense.

It’s important to keep learning how to be a good public speaker, but if you’re a comment-not-a-question guy, please learn to be a good audience member. Why would you bother attending a thing if you’re going to 1. Sleep or 2. Attack the speaker’s credibility and then refuse to accept her answers.
janeruffino.bsky.social
I also think the guy who would not stop being a jerk during the questions is the same guy who threatened to try to have me deported a few years ago.

What bothers me most is that I’m ALWAYS diplomatic and professional, but these experiences TAKE something from me. It’s really draining.

Update! Three dudes in the (quite small) room fell asleep and one dude online demanded to know how I can call this archaeology and why I’m doing research that is helping the Russians. It’s a good thing I live my life with low expectations.

Thank you!!! Also, we should catch up soon!!!

On the way to the Vasa Museum to give my first public talk about my PhD research! You can watch online if you want (link in here: su.bmc.nu/Modules/News...)

Had to tell this guy that museums don’t allow dogs tho
Small light brown scruffy dog looking a little disappointed because museums don’t allow dogs

I mean, in addition to it being cruel and unworkable, how do they expect them to learn Finnish? Every third country kid I know picked up Swedish in like 3 months just from daycare.

Finnish government solving the real problems here…

They really really hate immigrants and they show it with every chance. They do everything they can to show it.
Govt to introduce 3-year residence requirement for childcare allowance

This place is GRIM and also way too close to being in denial about it.

The official attitude is still that the state knows best, and now it’s mainly used on immigrants. Including things like reducing the age of criminal responsibility to 12, and, well, you know how that pans out
janeruffino.bsky.social
Also, industrial schools, Magdalene laundries, and mother and baby homes targeted largely poor families. Ireland also removed birthright citizenship by constitutional referendum in 2004, which left children stateless (which also happens in Sweden bc we also don’t have it!).

Swedification policies have been very brutal. And now are used against immigrant groups in more subtle ways.

During the last election, there was a threat to put kids into care if they didn’t have perfect Swedish by AGE TWO. My kid was 2, so this terrified me.

And all but one of the viewer/reader comments under the article are like “have you ever met a child????” This is a horrible idea, especially including YouTube and WhatsApp, which have become infrastructure!

This is THE WHOLE THING.

And remembering that even if you don’t FEEL like a person with power, as soon as you’re perceived to have it, your words and actions have so much impact, positive and negative.

if you don’t understand a leader’s job is to PROTECT the people with less power, you cannot be a leader

somebody who abuses people under their power is never an effective or even decent leader

just met a woman at a party & asked her what she did for work. could barely understand her because she was so soft spoken & had an accent so i just nodded a bunch.

“she’s in culture,” her friend said.

i finally realised that i was talking to
ANNA DELVEY

I ASKED ANNA DELVEY WHAT SHE DID FOR WORK
