You don't understand the difference between government, movement, and regime.

If we were living under fascism, none of you would be here daring to post things. You'd be erasing your social media accounts and keeping your head down; you'd know that peacocking your faux-bravery on a network would expose you to being disappeared.
You have no idea what "fascism" really means.

the regime is zip tying toddlers and ripping them away from their mothers unclothed... calling it fascism upsets this neo-con.

Can't recommend John Ganz's When the Clock Broke enough. Finally someone has written a Rick Perlstein-style book that serves as a "fossil record of Trumpism". This one covers Bush 41's Administration and I really hope he's working on another volume for the rest of the 90s and the Clinton Presidency

Unpopular Front is going to start doing some author interviews. Today I recorded with essayist and novelist Pankaj Mishra, which will hopefully be up on Sunday, and I'm recording with sociologist Dylan Riley on Monday

if you want to put in melinda cooper terms you could note that paramount-skydance and sinclair are both family-controlled firms while disney is one of the archetypal public companies of the era

The Kimmel Incident should be seen first and foremost not as a struggle over the first amendment but a battle over a subset of capital attempting a takeover of traditional broadcasting infrastructure. It has more to do with the Ellison/Weiss takeover of CBS than it does “free speech.”

It would also be great if social media sites had a feature in which they posted something on the top of the site saying, "It looks like you haven't been on social media for a while. There's been a thing. Do you need help understanding it?"

There should be a word for that cognitive situation where you need to search backward to figure out what news story is leading everyone online to talk about (for example) the rapture

there is a point here i want to amplify. the free speech defenders of the mainstream seem to have no awareness that actual free speech is often more fractious and destabilizing than civil and respectful. a society where speech is genuinely free isn’t the deferential space they want it to be.

“‘A new age of anti-politics was dawning, in which the adoption of substantive political positions or policy pledges was a risk, and the best a professional politician could do was remain likeable but vague on specifics, talking as little as possible about ‘politics’.”
