5/6 🗺️ Borders send strong political signals: about threat, sovereignty, and trust.

Our study shows how these signals can shift public opinion, even in EU core countries like Germany.
lisaherbig.bsky.social
4/6 That makes today's situation all the more pressing:

➤ Germany's border tightening comes amid warnings from neighbours (e.g. Poland) not to undermine Schengen
➤ The police union is warning of staff shortages
➤ And yet: the symbolism of the new governments action is powerful
lisaherbig.bsky.social
3/6 With fine-grained border data + SOEP survey data, we show that border closures led to:

📉 Less support for the EU
📈 More hostility toward immigrants

...particularly in border regions.

❗But effects faded quickly - within weeks.

2/6 The paper asks: Do border closures affect political attitudes?

Answer: Yes - but only briefly.

During COVID, Germany shut some of its internal EU borders while others remained open. We test what that meant for EU support and attitudes toward immigrants.

1/6 📢 Just as Germany announces it will begin turning back asylum seekers at its borders (starting May 6), our new article in European Journal of Political Research is out:

We often define the ideological space in terms of the economic and cultural dimensions; how does this resonate with ordinary citizens? This is the question Thomas and I explore in a new Element, analyzing answers to open-ended survey questions 🧵
