In just the past six weeks, the NZ Government has: • Released a new energy policy that doubles down on expensive fossil fuels. In fact, we'll import Liquefied Natural Gas which will literally double the price of gas. (Meanwhile, Australia has announced three free hours of power every. single day for millions of households because of the influx of cheap solar.) • Weakened the climate-related financial disclosure regime, exempting more than half of the companies currently subject to the requirements just months after bragging about the policy on the world stage. • Announced the halving of the ambition of New Zealand's methane target, in defiance of the independent Climate Change Commission which had advised strengthening it instead. Climate Change Minister Simon Watts conceded the new target is not consistent with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5C - a legal requirement in New Zealand and under international law. • Scrapped plans to price emissions from agriculture, despite the National Party. campaigning on the policy in 2023 and promising to implement it by 2030. • Abstained on a critical vote in the International Maritime Organisation on a price on international shipping emissions, against Pacific and European allies who were blindsided by New Zealand's backtracking. • Announced plans to unilaterally_gut key. provisions of the Zero Carbon Act without consulting the Opposition. Although National was intimately involved in the creation of the legislation, Watts said there was no need to follow that consensus-based approach going forward. • Delayed the 2025 deadline for a carbon neutral public service by 25 years, out to 2050.

The DOJ's OPR report drew sharp criticism as a "whitewash": the Department initially released only an executive summary to the public (the full report later surfaced via the Washington Post), and it recast what many viewed to be clear professional misconduct as mere "poor judgment." Critics of the report included the lead prosecutor in the Southern District of Florida. In court, victims' counsel also argued that DOJ had withheld key documents and failed to retrieve critical records - despite acknowledged victim-notification failures and the premature closure of the federal probe. The report downplayed a "data gap" in Alex Acosta's email inbox that lasted between May 2007 to April 2008-a crucial period, spanning from the time when Acosta's Office prepared a draft indictment against Epstein to shortly before Epstein pleaded guilty in state court, during which Epstein's lawyers aggressively lobbied federal prosecutors to end the federal case. As former judge Paul Cassell, one of the victims' attorneys, said, "The gap seems to have surgically struck on exactly the time period when most of the big decisions were being made. I was stunned because you would think if there was ever a case where the Justice Department would have been very careful to make sure they had complete records and things weren't missing, this would be the one." But mention of Acosta's missing emails were only in a brief section in an appendix on "methodology" in the report. Victims rebuked the OPR report as a "slap in the face" and said they were giving up hope of ever achieving real accountability.

The girls were very distrustful of the #FBI, who showed up without any warning, knocking on their doors & questioning them in front of their parents & spouses. In some cases, the girls couldn’t even tell whether the agents were working for the govt or whether they had been sent by #Epstein.

Let's be real with each other. For two decades...the American public has been gaslit into believing that the Epstein saga was: • A freak aberration... • A singular failure... • A tragic oversight... • A scandal contained to two individuals. It was none of those things. It was a syndicate... a convergence of money... intelligence...politics..socialite access networks..organized criminality..and elite impunity. The reason you haven't gotten the full truth... and never will..is not because the government is protecting Epstein. It's because the government is protecting itself. Epstein may not have been an intelligence agent... ...but intelligence agencies clearly found him useful. And when intelligence agencies find something useful...especially something tied to kompromat....that thing becomes protected. Not because it's moral. Because it's valuable. You will never see the full Epstein file because doing so would expose: • How intelligence agencies target elites • how kompromat networks function • How "unofficial" assets are cultivated • How sexual leverage is weaponized • How allied nations coordinate blackmail operations • How power is actually exercised in the shadows These are not the kinds of truths a government releases.

Post by Sean Kelly On publication day for my Quarterly Essay, a part of today's column in smh/age - As I write in the 100th Quarterly Essay, out today, this aversion to conflict is a hallmark of the Albanese government. Often, it has been deliberate strategy. Arguably, it has worked so far. The downside, though, is that we don't know much about Labor's advocacy skills. Also, those advocacy skills are probably rusty. To put this another way: if this government has succeeded politically so far by avoiding fights, then an opposition that forces it to fight will test its mettle. The second risk of the Coalition's climate chaos is a quieter one, but potentially more deadly. Two months ago, Labor president Wayne Swan declared that what kept him awake at night was the thought that the moment "you believe you've mastered politics is when it masters you" Complacency, he said, was "the handmaiden of decline". And so the other danger is that Labor never feels pushed by the Coalition; and, as a result, it is not as good a government as voters expect. And this is a particular problem because other sources of pressure are not immediately obvious.
