In 1850, Mexico abolished slavery, and escaped slaves tried getting across the border. Slave catchers became a de facto border patrol.
The Texas Rangers formed the model for the modern Border Patrol, established 1924. During the 1910s the Rangers carried out La Matanza, the Slaughter.
