Patricia Smith just won the National Book Award for Poetry for this collection. The first couple of poems had me in a chokehold. Smith is giving me new life right now.

Winner of the Booker Prize in 2021, Damon Galgut's THE PROMISE is a riveting, haunting tale that chronicles the disintegration of a white, morally bankrupt South African family seen through the prism of four funerals over several decades. A great book by one of my favourite authors.

This post first appeared on Substack 11/3/25. Live and In-person I used to babysit the man on the left; he is a social worker with Age Well now. The man on the right is my husband. It was well-attended, and some of my high school classmates came, whom I hadn’t seen in fifty years!
