Well.

Here we go. See you on the other side.

Bit on the nose from the BCC England news page there.

Well, yes, and given that this is more or less my mental image of hyacinths, it came as something of a surprise as a descriptor.

Apparently we're starting with vaguely supernatural waffling, so what could possibly go wrong.

This is giving me strong Nero in Quo Vadis shorts by Munsingwear vibes.

At the top of the stairs, for some reason the closing image is Ajax and Odysseus arguing over who gets Achilles' armour after his death. Why? I have absolutely no idea, and I didn't guess which scene it was before being told. It's so... random. Utterly random. Makes very little sense.

This image is on your right as you ascend the staircase. Chiron and Achilles are in the rondel at the bottom, Hephaestus and the Cyclopes make Achilles' armoor above, overseen by Thetis. Note the Cyclopes have one eye *but also* two sockets where normal human eyes would have been, for... reasons?
July 20, 2025 at 5:45 PM
This image dominates your vision as you begin to ascend the staircase. It is when Achilles is discovered on Scyros, where his mother Thetis has hidden him before the Trojan war in a vain attempt to stop him getting pulled into it. Note Hermes falling out of heaven above, breaking the frame.

We have had a weekend in Coventry, coming back via Hanbury Hall, mainly to see the Ridiculous Classical Reception Staircase that @aimeehindsscott.bsky.social told me about a couple of years ago. And it is *ridiculous*, and #puer had a wonderful time spotting which Greek god was which in the ceiling.

It has been far, far too long since I had a really bimbly Saturday.

There was also a cathedral.

I am inexorably reminded of this infographic of the differences between US/UK men/women and what animal they thought they could beat in a fight.

And now to walk back along the sea.
July 10, 2025 at 4:54 PM
A ruined medieval cathedral to St Andrew, obviously. Grounds closed but might try to get there at some point over the next few days.
July 10, 2025 at 4:51 PM
Another building where we'll be spending some time, again marked by its modest architectural program.
July 10, 2025 at 4:43 PM
Where we'll be spending some of the conference program. Just something small and modest, you understand.

So, I escaped from the student halls of residence... #CA2025

My ember cards have just arrived - with a huge thanks to @corabeth.bsky.social for the design.

If you would like one, please drop me a DM and the best postal address.

As promised - photographic evidence of said posh squeaky toy.

One more milestone down - final preach in my sending church this morning.

Took #puer to visit the Cartoon Museum in London today. Small but perfectly formed, with a special exhibition on cats. Recommended.
