I glanced down at the lovely shawl my friend made for me, and its equally stunning shawl pin. Some of you will know what popped into my head, lol. Sadly, it doesn’t have enough mass to spin, or I’d have fiber on it already.

It means to spin animal or vegetable fibers into yarn. Wool from sheep, silk from silkworms, cotton, flax, nettles, etc. I use two different types of spinning wheels and also spindles.

I have a top-whorl drop spindle and a Turkish spindle. But it’s my supported spindles that I really love. I can’t stand for long periods so I can’t get a long spin with the drop spindles. I can easily use the supported spindles while seated.

Looking at the fiber, I thought this was mostly green, lol. But it’s turning into mostly orange.

Is this not the coolest thing ever? It is a bobbin winder for the bobbins that go into a boat shuttle. I use those for storage bobbins for my spindles, since a spindle will not hold the whole amount that one typically spins at a time. Can’t wait to play with it.

One last spindle to show off…I snagged a Spanish Peacock on one of their unannounced sales, woot! I’ll have to dye some fiber to spin on it. It came with cutest ever little tiny braid of Targhee.

Some people use multiple spindles. I prefer to wind each cop off as I fill the spindle. It’s common to wind off onto something like a toilet paper core, but I use LeClerc bobbins, the same ones that are used in boat shuttles in weaving.

Sampler blanket for my oldest great-granddaughter. It wouldn’t be a WIP right now except that I discovered a huge glaring mistake about eight inches back from where it was nearly finished. I was afraid I’d drop a stitch when I ripped it back but I didn’t, and now I can finish it 😊 🧶

The extremes of supported spindles, lol.

The tiny one is a pocket (or travel) spindle, from Kravelli in Tbilisi, Georgia. The enormous one is the Cappadocia spindle from Fernando Santos in Portugal. My spindle collection so far is from all over the world 😊

Another spinner here. Supported spindle in this pic, but I have other spindles and a couple of wheels, projects on all of them, lol.

Coping methods—keep your hands engaged. You can’t manage your hands and your worries at the same time.

Creating something beautiful won’t make the problems go away, but it will give your brain a break from stressing over them.
