It would be too much to give you the full context of this moment, but fun fact about Reshketh biology: the elatria are bands of thin, bioluminescent skin that can be expanded or retracted to expose receptors sensitive to temperature, vibrations, and electrical signals.
"What do Reshketh do? To show intimate affection?" "Many things. I think the closest to your kiss may be when we touch our foreheads together and open our elatria, like I did to find your tracker. With our receptors aligned so close, this lets us feel each other, read each other, share an emotion or soothe one, or just appreciate the proximity of someone we care about." "In that case," I looked up at him as we sat slumped there together, “Tarek Vaali, would you do me the honor of helping me practice one last Reshketh gesture?" He looked at me, a little surprised, a little hopeful. “Yeah. I would like that." I smiled—a little sadly, but this was about honesty of feeling after all, it didn't seem right to dissemble—and reached up with my free hand, resting it lightly at the base of his jaw to guide his face toward mine. As our foreheads touched, Tarek closed his eyes and let his elatria expand and shimmer. It was a warm, tingling sensation so close. The dance of chemical light in his face was enthralling, but I closed my eyes as well, tried to feel the colors with other senses, let them mingle with the salt-sweet scent of him, the prickly velveteen feel of his skin.

A teasing little "number" for this Sunday's #WIPSnips:
A flash of shimmering red caught my eye, and I tugged at it to reveal a garnet-colored gown, the kind of basic slinky number made of stretchy, bouncy synthetics that wouldn't wrinkle when shoved unceremoniously into a duffel bag. I had forgotten I'd packed it, back when I thought these diplomatic sessions might have more evening socials and fewer nights climbing through ductwork to prevent our eventual murders.

They nodded at one of the guards behind me and the rest of the hands holding me let go, followed shortly by the binding at my wrist. "We will not impede your business, Honored One. But you should really be more careful. You trust too easily." Nejra could not have put on a better affectation of a shrinking violet if she'd been an actual flower. "Of course, Officer. I am honored by your vigilance on my behalf."

They looked down and their eyes got huge and sparkly. "OH MY GOD IS THIS—" I flailed my hands and they hushed to a whisper, "is this a little Reshketh robot?! How did you get this?" "The voice command input system. I'm told you're familiar?" They nodded enthusiastically. “I've been calling it Patches; it's been helping me out." Their eyes, impossibly, got bigger and sparklier as they lifted the drone into their lap like a puppy. "You named it Patches?"

I'm officially all moved in with my cats, my whole Virginia life packed up and deposited in New York state. Still a LOT of settling in to do, logistics to get sorted (like a, uh... day job 😅), but I'll be more active on here again soon. There's a lot of fun stuff coming in December and the new year!
