This is the kind of out-of-the-box forward thinking that we need in academia!

Hi from Nepal! I'm fine! It has been amazing to see, smell, hear and feel the revolution all around me. While sheltering, made this interactive map of the languages in Nepal. (Sorry it loads slowly.) A beautifully multi-lingual nation! #nepal lislab.shinyapps.io/LanguagesInN...

BREAKING: ICE is sending Russian dissidents back to Russia. When the dissidents arrived in Russia, the Russian authorities were given documents relating to their asylum applications in the US which under US law are confidential. This seems to be part of a secret agreement between Trump and Putin.
‘I escaped a Russian prison — only to end up in an American jail’
Dozens of Russian dissidents have been expelled from the US and forcibly returned to Russia with the co-operation of immigration authorities

Update from Nepal: Social media is shut down, including Facebook, IG, WhatsApp, and YouTube (!). TikTok and Viber still work. Officially it’s because these apps haven’t registered with the government. Local people are saying it’s to prevent political organizing prior to the election.

Totally agree. In my opinion the difference between intensional and extensional semantics is not whether the metalanguage considers multiple possible worlds (cases) but whether the object language (eg your formal representation language) can talk about more than one world/case at a time.

Today I met Dipak Tuladhar, who started a pre-school for Newar children in Kathmandu in 2003. After meeting with success, he has developed schools in other towns, and has been working with local leaders across Nepal to expand the concept to allow more kids to learn in their mother tongue.

Things that have gone in garbage trucks in sweeps in San Diego:
- All bicycles regardless of condition.
- Painstakingly reacquired ID documents.
- Urns with human remains.
- Tents with people in them.

Press needs to stop repeating govt euphemism of “clearing homeless camps.” I’ve witnessed it in other cities: massive destruction of personal property. Not just bedrolls & tents; family photos, Bibles, meds. Times I’ve seen it people weren’t even given option to move their things.

Apparently some people are finding an old version when they go to that link. I think it's due to browser cache issues but unfortunately clearing the browser cache has not worked for everyone. Here is a direct link to the current version:

This version also fixes a technical error in the presupposition chapter pointed out to us by Ede Zimmermann. We are very grateful to him, David Beaver, and Edgar Onea for help in figuring out how to solve the problem.

As always, we are grateful for feedback as we continue to improve the book!

This headline is perfect. It’s very funny, and explains clearly what is happening.

Yes, so many people are getting detained despite having proper paperwork, future court dates, or pending asylum status. This monstrous chaos has to stop!!

Go, a college student, has a dependent visa (her mother, an Episcopal minister, is here on a religious worker visa), which doesn't expire until Dec. But when she tried to renew it early, ICE nabbed her and sent her halfway across the US to a detention center.

At least 159 Palestinians in Gaza have starved to death amid Israel's ongoing siege blocking most humanitarian aid from entering the territory. Meanwhile, Israeli forces continue to kill scores of Palestinians on a daily basis, including at food distribution sites widely described as "death traps."

Hot take: it has to do with models. Lucas and I will release a new version of the textbook with revised chapters 1 and 2 soon and it includes a convention for drawing models.

It's ironic but not really that insane. Getting eliminated from above by a strongman for failing to show obedience has a very different vibe than being shunned by peers for not being nice to others.

I have a sabbatical coming up and I'm going to Nepal! Why Nepal? You can read about it at my first blog post about this trip.

TL;DR: linguistic diversity, writing systems (and pretty scripts), classifiers, and a school for Newar kids in Kathmandu.

As far as I understand this means that they get to rescind (claw back) money that has been allocated to things like USAID and PBS.

Is it illegal to deny inmates the ability to call their lawyers and families by refusing to provide PIN codes? (Setting aside the issue of whether they have earned their five dollars at a dollar a day of prison labor for the five bucks it takes to call home…)
