American 🇺🇸 tax payers, YOU, paid for NOAA's data, models & #science. Taking that away is theft.
When I worked for @noaa.gov I helped carmax figure out where/when to store cars. It's not left vs right or business vs people - it's just theft from the American people.

there are organized actions to take in response to all of this. they require that scientists talk to each other regularly and often and build a culture of solidarity.

1) most importantly one could simply use these “banned” words more, and make the intended filtering hard

🧵
TLDR: They've banned every word that has anything to do with people who are not white men.

My question here is simple: Researchers, what are we planning to do about this? Like actually. What's the action we take?
🚨BREAKING. From a program officer at the National Science Foundation, a list of keywords that can cause a grant to be pulled. I will be sharing screenshots of these keywords along with a decision tree. Please share widely. This is a crisis for academic freedom & science.

Suddenly felt urgent to find this in still-packed boxes from Summer ‘23 move…. Can’t imagine why.

I'm gonna say the quiet part aloud. Sadly there are many in scientific, academic & healthcare ranks as well as in the leadership of professional societies who support the purge of DEI.
The failure to peak out forcefully and rush to comply by some is unsurprising.

I know academics who use AI regularly, for work and play, and I'd really like them, and universities, to tell me how they contend with AI's bottomless appetites for power and water.

Is asking ChatGPT to interpret a Xmas song or making it write your syllabus worth this to you?
