New issue of @brieferyet.bsky.social out from Clarke & Esposito today. We look at the long term transfer of value from society journal subscriptions to the Big Deal (and Transformative Agreements) of larger commercial publishers. Also US govt chaos, LLMs stifling traffic, and the launch of openRxiv.

Timeline cleanse. It’s been a long week. Take a cue from this greyhound. Go be a lump on the lawn. You’ve earned it.

I spend a lot of my time putting numbers into context … this is a great (gut wrenching, nauseating) example. Thanks! But also, Euuuch!
Apple's fall in share price today is worth more than all but 4 EU listed companies.

Don't know if that's more embarrassing for Europe or America.

For anyone who grew up in Detroit, the view across the water to Windsor is a familiar one. So proud of my fellow Detroiters for this show of support for our Canadian brothers and sisters. It is the core of midwestern values: helping your neighbor. #elbowsup
📹 VIDEO: In a protest transcending national boundaries, hundreds of Detroiters and Canadians came out Saturday afternoon to voice their displeasure with President Donald Trump and the American government.

Now THIS is a timeline cleanse. Look no further if you need a little inspiration in hard times. I still can’t watch clips of Jasmin’s finish without tearing up a little.
While this year’s #BM100 is over, you can relive last year’s race with two documentaries: The Finisher: Jasmin Paris and the Barkley Marathons is at youtu.be/PgTEsybXw-4

My favorite thing about this event is that a) this went exactly as expected, and b) there were a bunch of people out there trying to get it done anyway. See you next year #bm100
The 2025 Barkley Marathons is over. There are no finishers. #BM100

Effective communication about science and why science matters is more important than ever. We absolutely need to elevate doing this difficult and often unappreciated work!
Please forward this to scicomm people you know!

As a scicommer myself, I know how incredibly scary it is to be in the arena right now. There is very real professional and personal risk. Scicommers are putting out their necks and deserve to be recognized and even celebrated in times of darkness.

great example of how associations can support colleagues in their field during this period of uncertainty - well done to the AMS
The AMS is temporarily opening its career services to all who need them, regardless of membership status, and offering dues waivers and meeting registration fee reductions for those impacted by job loss due to changes in the government.

Due to the layoffs I am afraid that we have had to take over the running of the US National Parks.

We are updating the park regulations but for now the most important thing people can do before visiting a national park is to marinade themselves for 12 hours in olive oil, lime juice & garlic.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.”

University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.

Goodhart's Law: "when a metric becomes a target it ceases to be a good metric". Came into effect the second they started counting how many EOs Biden signed in first 100 days vs. Trump vs. Obama. Text of the orders doesn't matter, he just wants the top score!
