I would say that would be a distorted interpretation of what is written there. Ultimately, we need to use our intellect and reason to interpret the words. Do they make sense? Do they make us better people? Do they make us cult members without self-criticism? Is it ok to eat a piece of lobster?

The religion that preaches intolerance, ignorance, and idolatry deprived of intellect, yes. The principles and ethics about which Jesus talked are yet valid. The charity. Tolerance. Wisdom. Those are unfortunately forgotten when religion says "it is our way or excommunication."
