few movies brave enough to ask: what if the fruit themed samurai was a car, and what if the car themed samurai was an orange

android making it impossible on a system level to modify the app data folder is so fucking irritating man. the usb port on my smartphone is fucked to the point it won't show up on my pc anymore so i guess i just won't be able to access my files forever?

evergreen thing to say but i really don't like the latest pocket casts update. they renamed the filters to "smart playlists" which sure whatever, but also removed the ability to put custom colours and icons on them so you can easily distinguish them from the menu

to the "old" allegations i say: did you know you might be able to get some "loonheffingskorting" money back if you're a student and report your income to the dutch tax office? also your municipality might pay your Eigen Risico, and the rent limit for huurtoeslag recently changed,,

a thing about "the danger of algorithms" that drives me up a wall is that people forget that algorithms can only manipulate numbers? everything that isn't already a number (e.g. watchtime) is tracked by proxies that are often crude and unreliable, like how often people use positive or negative words

the premise "humans are just complex input output machines" shouldn't pass unnoticed as much as it does, bc it's just kinda tacitly assumed in arguments about how chat gpt could have sentience or that we can use algorithms to carefully influence human behaviour

always irritates me a bit when people using the word liberal in the american sense to describe dutch politics -- liberals in the netherlands are the people who are concerned about the mortgage interest rate tax break and are neutral to positive about doing more racism. we're not the US!

PSA for the dutch followers: the rules around rent assistance (huurtoeslag) changed for 2026 so now people with low income whose rent is over €900/month can also qualify

the tax office has a little tool for calculating if you can get it and how much:

Huurtoeslag is een bijdrage in de huurkosten. Wilt u weten of u er recht op hebt met uw huurwoning? Lees alles over huurtoeslag en kijk bij uw situatie.

it's funny realising that our landlord didn't do so much as google "things that should be in a rental contract" before making ours, bc it's missing info that should be there (her contact information) while including clauses that are unenforceable because they're against the law

<whistfully> gosh I'd love for our appartment to be renovated by contractors who mess up only some rather than all aspects of construction...

my weekends are spent either watching tv shows made for 12yos or going full stepford mode, comparing the effect of Ajax to my previous cleanser and googling types of light bulb fixtures, talking to the roomfie about health insurance policies. on average that means I'm not super old, i think.

great new argument for climate justice just dropped:

"we should have countries pay for the costs of addressing climate change proportionate to how much CO2 they emitted, much like all of us would divide up the plumber's bill by the proportion of hair each housemate has gotten stuck in the drain"
November 24, 2025 at 8:05 PM
roomfie came into my room to say she thinks it's very nice that all of us agree about cereal and then left, to eat cereal

scenes like this are why i keep watching kamen rider movies

the guys who insist that AI will solve climate change are slightly less sophisticated than kamen rider movie villains working to activate the Big Machine Plan, except when the machine is running we are rewarded with power outages rather than a super sentai cameo

"imagine a hypothetical impenetrable barrier along a state border" is one of these tell-me-you're-a-philosopher-without-telling-me-you're-a-philosopher type sentences. apparently this kind of nonsense is what passes for conceptual clarification these days
November 20, 2025 at 9:57 PM
killer book btw! more people should read it
TFW your publisher sends you an email encouraging you to opt-in to licensing your work to AI developers, and when the book in question is titled 'Resisting AI: An Anti-fascist Approach to Artificial Intelligence'🤦‍♂️

people talk about living in a bubble as though it's a bad thing but personally i love going through life believing that anyone could break out an excellent Gerry Hannan impression at any time
November 19, 2025 at 11:44 AM
one can tell the roomfie is a little tipsy from the fact that she couldn't finish a sentence about literacy in edo era japan without breaking into a gerry hannon at the late late show impression

I'm a big fan of "The kantharos [van Stevensweert] is a cup of around half a kilo that wrote legal history" as a sentence
