I learned something interesting last night as I was reading The Brothers Karamazov.

Remember after the October 7th attacks that the Israeli media whipped up anti-Palestinian sentiment by saying that Hamas had mudered pregnant women and their babies? They used a trope from at least 145 years ago.
The text of Brothers Karamazov highlighted that reads, “The Turks, among other things, have also taken a delight in torturing children, starting with cutting them out of their mothers’ wombs with a dagger, and ending with tossing nursing infants up in the air and catching them on their bayonets before their mothers’ eyes.”
