Amazzone, equestrian or horsewoman in English, by Triestine painter Oscar Hermann-Lamb depicting an elegant, stylish early 1930s woman is a very representative work of his mature art style after returning to Trieste from studies in Munich, Rome, and Vienna. The unidentified young beauty with light complexion sits on a wooden green bench with her upper body in left profile angled slightly towards us. Her posture is is a bit stiff with her left hand jammed into her suit jacket pocket, but her gaze is directed directly at us as she gently rests a riding stick in her right hand across her lap. Her short auburn hair is fashionably modern for the time period though mostly hidden under a soft light grey patterned bowler hat. She is wearing a loose-fitting, rhino grey suit jacket, a light cornflower blue collared shirt, a full-length royal blue tie with milky dots, parchment white riding trousers, and long coffee-brown paddock boots. The focus of this realism-drenched portrait is on her overall aesthetic and elegance ... so that her personality and passion not only is known by her trendy, gender-bending attire, but also her detailed smoky eye makeup, rosy cheeks, and bright flame red lipstick. Lamb expertly captures details of her clothing and accessories. The textures, the folds of the fabric, and the subtle highlights on her skin are evident in the detailed painting style. The overall feeling from the painting is of classic, sophisticated elegance that is very specific to the era, yet, would some how be just as elegant and sophisticated 90-100 years later.
