Specifically, they wanted to shorten the duration to copyright to iirc 20 years, in addition to making enforcement less draconian etc, and Stallman was worried that companies would simply take 20 year old GPL'd code and use it without providing sources.

Oh, for sure I think pretty much all of us would agree that some aspects of current copyright law just suck no matter how you look at it, but even Stallman wrote to the Swedish Pirate Party asking for software to be exempted from their plan to weaken copyright.

Though tbh I'm not sure I buy that the software dev community "as a rule" detests copyright. Many libre licenses depend on copyright to require attribution, and of course copyleft just can't exist without copyright. Many devs want some control over how their code is used, and copyright does that.

I don't think they're necessarily at odds either. I dislike copyright law and I dislike plagiarism. I usually put links in comments to resources I relied on to create a piece of code, unless very obvious (e.g. the docs of the library I'm using).

What book is this?

Yesterday my computer was a bit sluggish, so I closed 4000 tabs.

Of course, I exported all my tabs as easily machine readable JSON first (much better than bookmarks, though I have about 100k of those too).

Maybe she dislikes LLMs specifically but likes all other AI stuff. Retvrn to expert systems, or something.

'course, like a dozen discord clones have been popping up lately.

And I've *heard*, don't know if this is true for sure, that tha Stoat devs are toxic. Reading people's DMs and stuff.

I've been testing Matrix and it *seems* to work. Though I don't like Element. Been using the Cinny app.

Hanania is a Nazi. There's actually no reason to think positively about him.

Remembering when I saw people argue that we should accept Russian control over Ukraine because of "spheres of influence". They weren't trying to explain Russia's actions, just straight up arguing that that's just how the world works so you gotta accept it. Absolutely mad.

Sometimes I wonder if IR realists are trying to explain why past states behaved in certain ways, or if they just like imperialism and work backwards to find historical exemplars.

Note to self: follow more furries

(Actually, I don't think I've seen anyone I follow talk about web dev except once or twice, so this placement feels a bit funny, though I suppose I'm way in the periphery)

Trump won by +13, but the seat has been held by Dems.

I'm pretty sure I need more seaweeds. I mean, I only have nori and wakame in my pantry. Clearly not enough.

I enjoyed the Code Geass dub.

Also Cromartie High School has an hilarious dub, which fits the tone of the anime well.

About half of it is explained by that. The other half is explained decreased coupling in general, i.e. fewer marriages and also more divorces.

Interestingly, in the US at least, marriage rates among college educated folks have been stable, so they're also having the most kids.

Ya. And some channels I'm in have a link to a public log in the topic.

Yes, which has nothing to do with E2EE. Of course, regardless of whether you're on Discord or something that has E2EE, you can just, choose to not allow randos to come in, if you want to reduce the chances of that.
February 7, 2026 at 11:01 AM
Most channels don't have rules against logging. People generally don't put up logs of channels with rules against it, cuz they'd get ostracized and banned. But of course, as I noted, this can be done even if you have E2EE. Privacy *always* requires putting trust in the people you're talking with.
February 7, 2026 at 10:55 AM
Really, the most likely reason why your chat logs might become public is simply someone deciding to copy them and post them online, and this can't be prevented with E2EE.
February 7, 2026 at 10:49 AM
There's a huge difference between stuff just being out there for anyone to see whenever they want, and some admin being able to snoop. The latter isn't good, but it's a far cry from logs actually being public. Same with Discord, in practice what you say isn't visible to people, even without E2EE.
