A listener in Finland asks: Is Vision Zero a process or a goal?

@wesmars.bsky.social: It's both.
@davidzipper.bsky.social: No, it's entirely a process.

Why has Mobility-as-a-Service flopped?

"There's no evidence I could find anywhere that these MaaS apps were changing how people travel or reducing driving. And I asked everyone, for years." [email protected]

A few hundred robotaxis in a city are a fun novelty, but hundreds of thousands would bring urban life to a crashing halt.

I really don't hate John Forester, but I do hate how we traffic engineers let his nonsensical "research" dismantle our approach to safe bicycling infrastructure

This week I learned that @wesmars.bsky.social really (and I mean REALLY) hates John Forester and vehicular cycling.

“You can’t subscribe your way out of poor transit service, dangerous streets, and bad land use planning.”
That quote pretty much sums it up! Good episode.

The guys have now done enough episodes that they have relaxed and the conversation flows well and these guys are both deeply knowledgeable and very engaged in making our streets safer.

On the latest episode of @lookbothwayspod.bsky.social, Wes and I discussed why traffic cameras are more popular than many realize:

"A very motivated minority of drivers lose their mind over the perceived inequity...even though speeding or running through a red light is by definition illegal."

One benefit of automatic traffic enforcement is that cameras aren't racist.

@davidzipper.bsky.social: "The cameras are not going to be weighing whether or not to give a ticket based on what the driver might look like."

Trump is trying to force Europe and Japan to import Detroit's gigantic SUVs/pickups that flunk foreign safety tests.

My take: Good luck with that.

From the new @lookbothwayspod.bsky.social: "There's a lot of reasons why Europeans and Japanese don't really want an Escalade or a Hummer."

USDOT's insistence that cities remove colored crosswalks has nothing to do with safety and everything to do with LGBT censorship.

Many people love speed humps -- and for good reason: They work.

But many cities won't install speed humps on streets with more than an eight percent grade.

A listener asks: Are those rules a mistake? @wesmars.bsky.social answers:

@davidzipper.bsky.social unloaded on Tesla in the latest episode:

“It’s one thing to argue – which is debatable – that if you buy a Tesla and use Autopilot you’re agreeing to the limitations and risks of doing so."

"But it’s another to basically treat everybody on the public road as a guinea pig."
