This is a great story. Kirby was brought onto DC in the 70s with great fanfare, and was told that he could take over any book he wanted. Either out of humility to the existing teams or simply a desire to stunt on ‘em- depending who you ask- Kirby said: “Give me the lowest-selling title you have.”

It’s always been interesting to me that Jack Kirby, when moving to DC, worked on Jimmy Olsen’s book. Why is that?

Yes. It is good practice for any artist to have examples of finished work, whether they be professional credits or school assignments, etc..
