Gonna need people to support middle grade and YA titles bc where do we think adult readers come from!! If kids don’t have good books to read from like 8 - 12 they are going to stop reading 😭😭😭😭

Read that article about the """writer""" generating 200 books a year with AI and needless to say, I had THOUGHTS
Writers Who Use AI Are Not Real Writers
Dorothy Parker famously (but probably not really) said, “I hate to write, but I love having written,” which is a sentiment I don’t largely understand or agree with in the broader …

To be very clear, that lady in the NYT article is not making any money with her hundreds of AI slop books.

She makes money by *convincing people* she makes money that way and getting them to pay her to teach them how to do it.

It's an evolved MLM, and the NYT is helping market it.

I feel really sorry for children's authors. Elbowed out of their careers by wealthy celebs who want a side hustle.
January 21, 2026 at 10:51 AM
This is my issue with celebrity "authors" who feel a picture book is an easy thing to write, or get a series of books because of who they are. The worst thing is they're usually all the same kind of story anyway.
no (specific) shade on Rob, it's just quite dispiriting seeing the wonderful beautiful new children's books at my local library by authors who have been honing their craft for decades, and then seeing books by celebrities jump to the front of the queue

I've given myself a real challenge for my Book Bingo this year. I'm going to take wild chances and who knows what I'll end up with!
Book Bingo 2026
I am being very brave and mixing up my Book Bingo this year. I said last time I was going to go with interesting covers for one box but after seeing a fun prompt on someone else’s review I am going to try and do only covers. It will mean I might have to actually hunt some books down and not fall into the same lucky habits. I thought about doing a separate one in addition to my usual but where’s the fun in that? Challenge is a challenge and I am going to be brave.

It's been a tough go of it picking my Top Five this time, and not because I had too much choice. But I've muddled through and I've made up a list of some of the great reads from 2025.
Top Five of 2025
Either my criteria for stars are getting harder, or I’m not coming across the fantastic books like I used to. I only had eleven five-star books in 2025: seven were a series reread, two were the last two books of another series, and the other two were a kids book and a YA. How is someone supposed to work with stats like that? I didn't even get five picture books! In light of that, I am taking a leaf out of my own book and picking books that had a lasting impact, five stars or not, or something that was near close to perfect but didn’t quite hit the mark.

People are harshing on some “diverse reading challenge” thing that’s going around, and I get it, but looking at what you read and asking yourself “what isn’t represented here?” is imo a good and healthy practice
