I read the numbers somewhere for the last municipal election, and they were pretty sad.

(Also, I am not pleased with our new deputy mayor)

I couldn't find it, so a very nice elderly French woman showed me where it was!

Interesting presser today with Premier David Eby, who seems to be hitting his rhetorical stride in response to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's push for the feds to prioritize a new pipeline through BC to the north coast
#bcpoli
“If Alberta gets a $50 billion publicly funded pipeline, then I want a $50 billion federal guarantee for projects in British Columbia as well. And I want $50 billion for every province across Canada and every territory, because their projects are just as damn important as Alberta’s pipeline is.”

#31DaysOfGraves day 7: angel

Père Lachaise, Paris
Copper doors to a sepulcher. The two doors are shaped like angels standing facing each other, with their wings touching. Their hands, which meet at the inner edges of the doors, are the handles. The spaces between their wings and around their heads are filled with glass.

#31daysofgraves day 6: gender

Oscar Wilde, who defied the gender norms of his time
A large grey stone grave monument. The upper half of the monument is carved into the form of an angel. The angel is flying horizontally, and is very Art Deco. It is wearing an Egyptian style headdress and has long, angular wings. The bottom half of the monument is plain stone encased in glass. The glass is because people kept kissing the grave and the lipstick was damaging the stone (there are a few lipstick kisses on the glass, which seems terribly unhygienic).

Inspired by a post I just saw in which someone admitted they hadn’t seen a single episode of Friends nor the film Love Actually… what cultural hole do you have that’s a bit weird for your generation?

I’ll go first: I haven’t seen Dirty Dancing.

A rather splendid pelican in Père Lachaise
A bronze sculpture of a pelican. The pelican had a green patina and appears to be giving the camera side eye.

Oh, man. After reading the article, what it actually says is that an historian did a lot of archival work and spatial research to determine the site of a killing and then the family of the likely perpetrator stepped forward with photographs to confirm identity.

America is currently a giant experiment to see how long we can keep stuffing a year's worth of news and outrage into every single day before everyone's heads explode

Scenes from a sepulchre, Montmartre Cemetery, Paris
A scene on the wall of a sepulchre, made from a blue-tinted metal. The panel shows a side-wheeled paddleship, with a single smokestack, journeying through the ocean. A figure can be seen standing in the stern. A scene from the wall of a sepulchre, made from blue-tinted metal. The paddleship from the previous panel is now sinking, stern-first, in heavy seas.
