Anti-influencer. I just stroll to the tune of my own harmonica and sometimes skeet about it.
The government shutdown does include cool old warships being shuttered to the general public, but glad I at least got to see Ol Ironsides.

Spending time in Vienna is a good reminder that sometimes, very successful empires fail, and that it's ok. When Mozart died, George Washington was still president. I don't think anyone in 1790s Vienna was worried about America taking their place.

Just a little naked guy, creeping.

The old town hall, still sporting the cannonball from Napoleon's siege of the city over 200 years ago.

Ultimate Eastern European moment. Counterfeit Micky Mouse, with no idea how to play guitar, panhandling anyways.

Day trip to Bratislava because KLM lost my luggage. How did Eastern Europe get to be so much cooler than Western Europe?? The coffee shop we found was a jungle living room 💚

As predicted, the high fitness friends nearly killed me. But the views were impeccable.

It really doesn't get better than seeing large, harmless wildlife on your bike ride.

Encountering harmful wildlife immediately turns the ride into Type 3 fun. And I include wasps in that group.

I am so here for this trend away from overpriced "fuel" for endurance sports. Would much rather have me a baguette filled with tasty things to enjoy mid ride while enjoying where you are for just a moment.

But I'm also not known for having a "race pace," so there is that!

I was caught off guard by now deeply proud I was of wearing out my old drive train. I have ridden this bike for so many miles that I needed a whole new set of... basically everything makes me feel like a real badass. And the inaugural ride was appropriately dumb: 30 miles, 4500' of elevation gain.

A scurry of squirrels.

Harvard giving away some civics classes is a fine first step. But what we really need is a full-blown, free Associates Degree on US Government with ad campaign from Reese Witherspoon asking, "what, like it's hard?"

Much needed escape to the desert. The economy can't hurt me here.

Update: although I was lucky last night, tonight my luck ran out. Apparently the face I saw was a snow crab, and it's snow crab season! And I'm not one to pass up a local specialty! So I ordered the crab, face and all.

It was delicious.

My goal in 2025 is to be more like the little old Japanese man I saw in the park today, going from tree to tree, wishing it Happy New Year.

Was anyone else traumatized by the X-Files episode "Darkeness Falls"? Because I saw this sight at twilight along the banks of the Rio Grande and had a little PTSD.

There's nothing quite like a rainstorm in the desert. But. There's two ways water can kill you in the desert. Not enough of it (dehydration) or too much of it (flash floods). When we saw this very much NOT blue sky while backpacking out of a slot canyon, we knew it was time to go!

As if Gen Z doesn't already make me feel old, now I'm a certified Elder??

Went to a mountain biking bachelorette party over the weekend, which was awesome. Came back and employees are asking how the trip was, to which I say "well, the bride to be fell down a ravine and I came face to face with a bear." And now I've learned it's better to be feared than loved.

Has anyone else noticed that Glaurung looks a lot like the Rhinelander Hodag?

It is a truly magical place to be able to ski on a snow-covered mountain while looking down into a red rock desert. Remind me again why environmentalism is controversial? Cuz this seems like a no-brainer that needs to be protected...

Why make an anchovy pineapple beer? My hat is off to the plucky brewery that dared ask, "Why not?"

Maybe it's just solo travel that makes me introspective, but I think a lot about faith and spirituality while traveling in SE Asia. The Pak Ou caves were sacred well before Buddhism came to Laos, and when Laos became Buddhist, so did the caves. Seeking divinity is a hard-wired part of human nature.

Laos is developing rapidly and is not the same country Anthony Bourdain visited 10 years ago, when he said, "It was the last truly remote place on Earth." It won't be the same country 10 years from now either. Spectres of what it was persist. Harbingers of what it will be encroach.
