All these papers out here about why there is no social democratic party in the US but I'm just out here wondering why there is no high-speed rail in the US.

This 💯. Not everyone is kind and helpful without a snorkel up their rear but the people worth knowing will support you in your own (not their) intellectual endeavors bc they know thats how you productively generate knowledge. (And thank you, lovely meeting you and congrats on the book!)

This year at APSA, several mentors and friends reminded me of something worth sharing: some work just takes longer.

It doesn't matter how much you work. The discipline doesn't always reward it, but it doesn't mean it's not important. In a career with so much randomness, ask the questions you want.

When studying "hate" (the famous -isms), it's important to understand the various causes and mechanisms that drive empirically similar (or even identical) outcomes in behaviour.

APSA and Vancouver bound! I’m thrilled to have organized the panel, “democratic backsliding and opposition resistance,” taking place tomorrow at 8am PT. I’ll be presenting findings from my dissertation on international pressure and opposition to democratic erosion along with some great scholars.

In case anyone was wondering what it's like to have an economist and a statistician as parents.

Here are some #APSA panels that explore the relationship between parties, CSOs, and democracy *in European Politics* featuring papers by brilliant jr women; @francescayton.bsky.social @maajanmor.bsky.social and what are sure to be sharp comments from uber smart and sharp @mierkezat.bsky.social!

As this link gets explored more make sure to read the OG work on this that is all comfortably theorized outside European politics (mostly by social policy scholars and sociologists) who study the same issues in different contexts and have done so in the absence of data collected by strong states.

Why did I know they mattered? (Besides my shelf of autocratic passports)

I specialize in the study of a region that looked more like Turkey or South Asia during liberalization.

Then
@benansell.bsky.social
+ Johannes Lindvall were releasing their book Inward Conquest.

✨Everything✨ clicked.

I started studying the strategic origins of CSO-party linkages in CEE in 2019: competition (over what), resources, ideology; I was citing a small crew in European politics.

This #APSA it's so nice to see more Europeanists studying the relationship btwn CSOs, Parties + Democracy!

But also, I didn't know it was possible to miss a building.

(If you're here for APSA, I suggest a stroll for some quiet time.)

Ten years after leaving Vancouver, I'm pleased to report that my memory has not failed me: public transportation is as awful as I remember it being (for a big city).

(People used to the US, you'll be way more than fine. I relied on this public transportation network for a very long time.)

Just getting ready for the Job Market, so I uploaded a new working paper to my website (www.lotemhalevy.com/research.html), along with some other goodies.

The paper should be available on SSRN shortly!

As we enter September, you may see posts with news of jobs, promotions, grants, fellowships, and the like. That’s great! We should celebrate with colleagues, especially in an industry where rejection is the modal outcome. 1/n
