'tis the first night of #Hooptober12. I've got my popcorn, a stack of movies, it's time to get lost in horror.

Hooptober movie 18/31:

THE FLU (2013)

Solid disease movie, though it gets a little repetitive and relies too much on scope creep to up the intensity of the ending. That said, really charismatic performances made me buy in enough to the characters it kept the rating higher.

No no it's okay, we have a Barney movie totally coming that's gonna fix everything.

Tonight I find out if Nosferatu (1922) pulls off being 95 fuckin' minutes long.

Do I NEED to pay Vimeo $5 to download the forgotten French found footage vampire movie Nosferatu(dot)com? Absolutely not.

Am I morbidly curious about a critically-panned movie with what looks like a Gmod character model in the poster? Absolutely.

twice a year the entire U.S. press becomes a marketing extension of a single billionaire-owned retailer, and nobody in any position of editorial power thinks it's weird or gross

Silent Hill got lucky that it doesn't fit any any of the categories I have left to fulfill in Hooptober.

Hooptober movie 17/31:

GRAVEYARD SHIFT (1990)

There's a reason the Letterboxd and modern media for this plaster Brad Dourif all over it despite him having like five minutes of screen time, and it's because the movie would be so much better if he was the protagonist.

A ★★★½ review of Graveyard Shift (1990)
There are many things Graveyard Shift failed to deliver on, but randomly killing off Brad Dourif with an unrelated environmental kill. It's a monster movie where the monster is 1: not scary and 2: has...

It's wild to watch him play a wacko Vietnam vet and then it clicks he's actually the right age in 1990 to have been one.

I just love that The Devil's Backbone was named that because originally it was set in the mountain range of Mexico but when it shifted over to being set in the Spanish civil war it didn't make sense. So Guillermo del Toro made up two scenes purely to keep the name he liked.

Chris Bores built his ghost hunting career on a 90 minute conversation with a ghost. Sure would be a shame if I found something in his footage...

Join me this Friday at 7:30 EST / 6:30 CST for the premier of my first video essay. I'll be in chat, it'll be fun!

Just updated Android and suddenly my phone feels like a baby toy with how chunky and childlike the new UI is.

But for real: it opens with this psychosexual opening that's weird as hell and I settled in like "fuck yeah let's get weird with it."

Then it played with unreliable narration and I was like "fuck yeah lets' get weird with it."

Then the ending is "everything worked out perfect and fine. :) "

Hooptober movie 16/31:

ALL THE COLORS OF THE DARK

Maybe giallo isn't for me, because I see all these reviews saying this is peak and I'm over here like "THIS is peak?"

Aesthetically gorgeous at times, good ideas, half-baked and sloppily assembled.

I'm not saying nudity makes or breaks a movie, but you gotta be pretty damn run-of-the-mill to have so much nudity it's literally on the poster and I'm still like "that was forgettable" seven minutes ...

Wild that the Italians didn't find a second sex position until the 1980s.

Instead I'm watching the one where a traumatized lady is so lonely she agrees to go to a cult meeting and ends up getting forcibly kissed by a bunch of pale English dudes (it works and fixed her trauma)

If you have a speaking role in this movie there's a 90% chance you'll be in a scene built around getting your boobs out.

Ah yes the 70s fascination with side characters telling protagonists "oh, you wanna talk to a psychiatrist? You're dumb and stupid and dumb and a freak for thinking about that. Also they're idiots and wrong."
